Hey guys I have a 1992 MTX with a rapidly failing TOB.

I have been driving her easy but it's getting worse.

It absolutely will not go into first until I come to a COMPLETE stop. Also shifting into third is rough to while moving. If I go into gears slow, it will grind in EVERY gear. But quick shifts give little resistance.

I trying to save up money for the SHONUT clutch kit and tranny refresh.

My question is should I stop driving her until then. Will my synchros wear a lot faster. Like I said, I will be replacing the blocking rings and seals but will my synchros be damaged if I keep driving for another month.

Just for reference I drive about 20-40 miles a day.

I would say so. If I was you, I would stop using the car if there's other transportation and wait for the rings to come in. If you keep grinding at those synchros, it'll eat at um' and you'll find shreadings in the drained tranny fluid when you do it. That's what I found in mine :D But seriously if your just replacing the rings, save the synchros and put the car to a rest until it's fixed. Your clutch could be still good and just the rings acting up, but it's good to go ahead and replace it at the same time, all at once. Good Luck. wink

I'm almost positive its the TOB because its making the classic noises and not disengaging the cluch all the way.

I can tell when I push the pedal its not releasing like it should.

Thanks for the fast response.

I'll start driving the Cadillac Eldorado instead, so I can save the tranny in the SHO.

That sounds like your quill sleeve worked itself loose and is keeping the TOB from releasing proper. When you purchase the clutch from shonut and get the TOB in the kit, it'll have the TOB with the quill sleeve. When you apply it, Josh says to use some stuff but I forgot and I myself used the red type Loctite so it won't slip out. If you don't have an idea of what I'm talking about, let me know and I'll explain to detail. wink

I found that in my SHO, if I shift "slowly", the revs drop off too fast, and I find my self easing the clutch up slow so I don't **** the SHO. Honestly, the 2nd-3rd is the worst. If I shift at like 3000 rpm from 2nd to 3rd, the revs drop so fast that if I don't shift fast enough, the shift wont be smooth. And even when I do shift fast, I find that it's hard for me to get a smooth shift anyways. Keep in mind that the trans has over 205K and has not had a rebuild. It got redline and a drainplug at 190Kish. Should I drain the redline and examine the fluid? Thanks.

As Rick said. :D I totally forgot that one. :p My SHO was low on fluid when I bought it and it was doing some grining, but when I filled back up to the correct spot, it was to late. Now my synchros are worn pretty bad and I have my old tranny fluid sitting with the brass look in it and the oil pan with chips of brass in it. Hopefully this one is taken care of quickly. I still drive my SHO though because I know some tricks to it so it won't grind, but they don't work with all SHO's. It's just the problem and where it's at and the certain thing to work around a grind and you have to find it and it takes a lot of playing with speed and shifter movement.

It's definitely a good idea to park the SHO if the TOB is obviously on it's way out.

I've so far seen 4 SHO MTX owners let their clutch go to the point of the TOB wearing through some of the PP fingers, then being pushed through the fingers, tearing them off and destroying the TOB. The fingers and TOB bits are then ground through the lower part of the trans case and into the trans by the spinning PP/flywheel...clutch replacement turns into transmission replacement.
