I want to buy this SHO, but I need some advice

I have a lead on a 93 Taurus SHO and I need some advice from the experts !! Its a red 93 with a 5 speed. The motor cranks but doesnt start and on one side of cylinders doesnt hold any compression so I'm assuming the timing belt is a gonner. I dont know much else, the owner said the trans is in good shape, the suspension is in great shape, the paint is a little sad but its an AZ car so there is no rust. The interior is in sad shape too. I need to know how to post pictures, I have a ton of them, if someone wants me to email them to them or explain to me how to, that would be awesome. Here is the catch, I can get it for $300. If anything pick up the car for the $300. How's the interior? You could make more than your money back parting the car or you could always do a 3.2 swap if the engine is blown.

its telling me the pics are not in the correct format. But its the mystic red color (???) The interior is in crappy shape, stained, the leather is cracked on the driver seat exposing some foam. The rims and tires look like they are in good shape. How much is this car worth parted out ? It also has a salvage title I'm sure some of you think I'm crazy for entertaining this idea !! What is this car really worth, running or parted ? However, I have the means to do major repairs. I'm in Los Angeles, what SHO resources to I have out here ?

My brother went to an auction, found a 93 ATX Blue with 110,000 miles and it was clean body/interior wise and it started and ran fine( did not get to drive it), he went back to bid the next day, got there a little late, the car sold for $750!!!!!!!!!! $300 and what you described sounds like a pain in the butt.

I mailed you the pics guitar. Please be brutally honest with me here. I will want to make it a daily driver if I can get it to run right again. What are the chances that when this timing belt/chain let go, it caued serious damage to the valves and pistons ? Is it a chain or belt that runs the cams on the 3.0 ? The clutch is slipping too when it ran. Other than that he said it drove straight as an arrow and rode awesome. He just had the front end rebuilt. Fix it ? Part it ? Let me know what you think. I might be able to get the car for as little as $200 and the cost of going to pick it up in AZ ($100-$120)

I say part it out. You will make your money back and then some, but not that much more. I think the experience of taking the car apart will help you if /when you get another SHO. You will know just how to get to something and where it is. Trust me, buy it, part it, and toss that money into a "Buy a Better SHO" fund. thumb

In a situation like this, you have to assume the worst,... that you are buying a parts car. If there is truly no compression on one cylinder, then you would need an engine swap, or at minimum a head gasket. Your investment isn't much, so if you have room to have it sitting around then buy it and see if you can fix it cheaply. If you can't, then you could make money if you part it out, or sell it so someone else that wants it for parts.

yeah, but what do you think I could get for it ? $ wise ? What are the rims and tires worth ? the dash, trans, engine, etc... ? If I have $320 invested in this car, what can I get out of it ? $1000 ? $2000 ?

Definately worth $300. You could part it out and buy a SHO w/ the money you make. Or you could spend a couple $100 getting it running up to par and later find another parts car and swap the interior etc. But its up to you... heres the pics

The interior looks like the front seat(s) could get swapped and I would definately get it detailed (it can do wonders). I have seen 3.0L motors for for $550 shipped w/ 1 year warranty on eBay before! So it is a tough decision. You could make a crap load of money back if you parted it out. I would search ebay for SHO parts so you can get an idea of what you can get out of them. (slicers, eatc, seats, etc etc) Good luck! thumb

Sounds like a good canidate to yank the motor and put in a 3.2 with a new clutch. (go rust-free AZ!) If you can do the work yourself I'd say go for it. If you're gonna pay somebody to do it, well, buy one that runs.

Seems to me like it's not worth the work. Unless you're doing the work for fun. The amount of work to be done will take a while, even if the motor runs and you don't have to spend a lot of $$ on maintenance.

You'd get more money off the:

-tranny
-rims
-y-pipe?
-steering wheel (w/ airbag) (I'd be interested in this if you DO decide to buy and part. It would look cool in my 91. )

I've also seen the sunroof motor/ cover, headlights, etc... on ebay.

Thanks for the feedback guys and Guitar, thanks so much for the pictures !! It doesnt have a sunroof but it has everything else. I have quite the decision to make and I need to make it soon. I dunno. Either way, BUY IT! Do some trouble shooting first.

Then ditch the 3.0L, rebuild the tranny, and swap in a 3.2L...or a 3.4L V8! thumb

Or turn it into a custom. Or an autoX car or all out drag car!

I just really have a thing for GenII MTX's...especially in red or silver.

And she doesn't look so bad! I've seen worse project cars.
