Im soo sick and tired of mechanics telling me different shi**. Im soo glad this forum exist. I love this site..(sniffle) :dribble:

One mechanic told me a New alternator for my 93 manual sho will run me $400. My new mechanic telling me that it will be $290.00 not including labor. I ask if he can put or just rebuild the alternator and he told me "that is the price of a rebuild one..they don't make new alternators for my car" Please tell me he was bullsh***ng me.

Basically im asking, is it possible to find a brand NEW alternato for my sho? I am locate near a autoZone and a autoStruass store. Help!!!

You might be able to get one for Ford. AZ lists a Duralast Alternator for $129 plus $70 core, that's a rebuilt one with a limited lifetime warranty.

I paid $47.89 for mine to be rebuilt at a local alt and starter shop. New voltage reg, new bearings, and new shaft thinging inside (i dropped mina dn bent the shaft while doing my 3.2)

Has been working great now for 4500 miles since installed. Love saving money like that. You might want to look in the phone book find a shop like that, and pull the SHO alt yourself. It's a 20 min job with a Basic metric wrench set. Takes more time to get the belts back on than to take the alt out.

Depending if your car is a 93 ATX or MTX I have a few spare ATX alts laying around my garage. That way you could have one already out of the car and take it right over to a shop to have it rebuilt. Then its a direct swap.

I gotta tell you though if you are capable of putting air in your tires or changing a flat, you are overqualified to put an alternator in a SHO. What is it 3 bolts and loosen the belt?

Well, he's not kidding if he's quoting a Ford alt - they are outrageously expensive, and they are reman'd now (as are Ford clutch kits for our cars).

Aftermarket, the cheapest I was able to find at a place I trust for components like this (read, not Autozone) was $157, back a couple of years ago. That was with you handing them your core; was something like a $120 core IIRC).

I paid less than $100 for a complete rebuild including new brushes. But then I let the car go. Meh.

On the ATX it's 4 bolts, one for the main pwr stud and you have to remove the upper idler pulley. The spring loaded belt tensioner makes taking the belt off a breeze.....
