One of the first things usually done to these cars for performance is replacing the restrictive y-pipe. The factory pipe has a restrictive point where the pipe meets the 2nd catalytic converter. See this pic.

If the car doesn't hit the rev limiter around 7300RPMS, the car probably has a computer modification. The motors in these cars are known for their high revs. 8000RPMS is usually what the chip will get you. If you're spinning up to 8k, the accessory pulleys should be replaced. One reason for the 7300RPM rev limiter is to protect the accesories from spinning too fast. The pulleys are probably polished aluminum and easy to spot.

Do rod shifters come stock in the mtx shos
89-early 91 are cable shifters

The rod shifter was brought into production mid year in 1991, and ran through the end of production in 1995.

Camms for the SHO are reground stock ones that use lash caps to make up the difference. With out tearing it apart to inspect things it would be difficult to tell. If everything else appears stock I would imagine the camms are too. Replacing them is pretty far from a first mod.
