I noticed that partway through the winter, almost after I got stuck in the snow, that there is a kind of grinding, humming noise coming from somewheres when cruising above 25 mph. Worse at 55-60. Everything seems ok but just wondering if anybody is aware of any TSBs or something.

I have the same issue, driving me crazy. I am thinking that it may be a wheel bearing. It sounds like I have offroad tires especially at higher speeds. The odd thing is, it only happens when rounding turns to the right, if I turn the steering wheel to the left it goes away.

I am start to notice something similar, I would call it more of whine. And can only hear it when accelerating from like 40mph on up and at 85 its pretty much a constance hum/whine. But not what I consider a typical wheel bearing noise. If anyone could further elaborate to help me pin down would helpful.

Seeing same issue

Noticed a similar issue on my SHO. Don't notice the humming until 45-60 mph but will contiune through decel until about 20?

I have to turn off the radio and turn down the fan to notice it - my thoughts are wheel bearings or transfer case issue? Im going to see if the problem persists under turning today.

My SHO only has 6800 miles on it and I am planning on taking on a road trip for the holidays. Debating wether i should take it into the dealer...???

Same Issue Here

Was seeing the same problem on my SHO. Constant humm/vibration from the front of the car when traveling 30+ mph. Its being diagnosed by the dealership now. Hopefully its just a wheel bearing and i can get it back pretty soon. Frustrating that a new $$$$ car with under 7K miles is seeing these types of problems.....

Definetly wheel bearings. The ones they came with are junk from the factory and don't last. Warranty issue. Mechanic told me it's very common now. Mine was done at only 28,000 miles.

I that would be great if thats all it is for me as well. Having it looked at monday, but for me it doesn't sound like a bad wheel bearing that I've ever heard. What hear is sounds like a gear whine, no noise while coast at any speed or while cornering. Only while accelerating or under a light load. Sounds like much like a old muscle car manual trans.

Could be the valve body? On other Ford models, there is a TSB for a transmission bump when coasting then resuming acceleration. May also need a PCM reprogram.

No bump, and as far I know I am the only person with a SHO that is experiencing. However when googling many folks with AWD edge's have had similar issue and it was the PTU.

Crash,

My Denali XL with AWD (not 4WD) had the same issue starting around 30K. GM wouldn't replace the front differential or the intermediate PTU as they said it was within "GM sound limits". Got worse, but leveled off around 50K. Drove me crazy between 55-65mph. Was worse when lubricants were warm. Had all synthetics installed and it was better for a short time. Might have just been new ****. Traded on Brick in Jan 2010 at almost 90K and never had a failure.

Just one of those things that will drive you CRAZEEEE!

Hope your's is different and easily fixable. Know you work for Ford, so you may get better treatment, but if they look at your ECM.... watch out....

Update: Bad PTU, didn't get to personally talk to the trans tech like I wanted to. But he said the ring and pinion gears are bad. I seen everything all apart all looked good, but anyone that has replace ring & pinion gears on older car knows if gears aren't properly meshed together they'll whine like crazy. But I hope to talk to him personally when I pick up to get all the details.

Glad you got it figured out and fixed. Sounds like you had the same issue as my GM Denali. They must have been worn just enough to make it whine when under light load at fixed hwy speeds.

Not fixed yet, but thats what dealer is tell me the problem is. Should have back in another day or two. I did notice when PTU was all apart I tried turning pinion gear in the case from where the drive shaft mounts and it didn't want to turn by hand. I didn't try hard to turn, mainly what to feel for play in it. But I felt it was odd that it was so tight it didn't want turn freely.

Gosh,,, that's just part of the 25-30% parasitic friction in our AWD drive-trains... though in your case it might have been causing the whine.... Wouldn't it be nice if these were RWD cars with AWD instead of the opposite... Then the front engine would be longitudinal and we could be running the pickup engine!

Update: Not the PTU. I don't know what they heard inside there, but it changed nothing. Still sounds the same. Looks like the tranny will be next. At a later date though.

My 2010 has about 40K on it and a loud humming sound (from driver side front I think). I think it's a bearing. Would this be covered under the 60K warranty or just the 36K warranty?
