I work with a guy who is willing to sell me a 96 SHO cheap, but it has a broken igniton. The key turns (feels very sloppy) but nothing happens. He said he was driving and it wouldn't shut off. He used the fuel pump **** switch to shut it off. Then he disconnected the battery. Can anyone give me any advice on replacing this? General steps...level of difficulty...special tools needed. He swears the car runs and drives good, but just needs the key igniton replaced. Please help

If it is anything like the old SHOs it is pretty easy.

The key has to be in and in the run position. Then push up into a small hole from the bottom with a small drill bit, release and pull out the cylinder and key.

FWIW, most locksmiths should be able to re-key a new cylinder to match the old keys for around $15 (although I've heard them charging as much as $25). Will save a lot of hassle dealing with a new cut and PATS.

On my '93 the locksmith re keyed the cylinder to my original key at no charge. I did buy the cylinder from him. And it was the same price as AZ would have charged but the AZ one would of had different keys. He also had PATs keys that were the same size as a regular key but had a small chip glued to them.

I am a Ford tech and I would bet money the plastic actuator in the steering column itself is broken and not the cylinder. I have seen a ton of them. To fix you have to remove the column and diassemble and install two new pieces. They are kinda yellowish white. Not real bad if you have time to do it.
