I guess that my halfshaft or carrier bearings are shot and i need to replace them soon. Since it has to be pulled, I'm going to have someone rebuild my trans, but I'm going to take it out myself to save some cash. Can anyone break this down for me or what? It shouldn't be that hard, but I want to make sure I dont miss anything and avoid taking off stuff that doesn't need to come off. Anyone have a link to a transmission install or removal? It's for a '93 ATX. Thanks.

Actually something isn't working, the site wont even show up. I'm not doing a rebuild myself, I'm just pulling it out. It cant be that hard, I just need to know if I need any special tools or anyhting. Drop the subframe, drop the exhaust, disconnect driveshaft/cv, disconnect shift linkage, maybe speedometer, what else? Anything important I should know about? Thanks guys.

Did you ever find the manual? Fordcd.com is still not working.

I am going to change my 93 ATX on Sunday. I have done this for other cars so I'll just wing it if I have to. I did want to verify that the transmission can come out from the bottom w/o removing the engine.

I have a crappy Haynes manual that recommends pulling the enigine first then pulling the transmision. If dropping the trans out the bottom doesn't save a lot of time I might just pull the whole engine so that I can try to find some of the oil leaks in my trans and engine:)

THIS IS HOW I AM SWAPPING MY ATX TRANS ON 93 SHO

1. PREPARE YOUR CAR AND WORK AREA
Have car towed home while your children laugh at your misfortune:(
Laughter.jpg

Try to convince your wife that the car should be fixesd with regular tools, not explosives!

2. REMOVE FRONT SPINDLES FROM CAR
Support car on Jackstands
Remove front wheels.
WheelsOff.jpg

Unbolt tie rods and use a pickle fork to separate the Tie-Rod from the Spindle
PickleFork.jpg

Unbolt strut-rods on the subframe side the control arm on the subframe side and the knuckle pinch bolt,
Hang the caliper from my spring with a coat hanger then pull everything out as an assembly.
Then do the other side.
Put all of the bolts back in their threaded holes so they don't get lost.
Remove inner Fender on Driver's side. I use vice grips to pull the pin from the plastic clips.

InnerFender.jpg

3. REMOVE ACCESSORIES FROM ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Remove transmission pan to drain out fluid
Remove Starter
Remove front 02 Sensor.
First you have to undo the electrical connection.
FrontO2Housing.jpg

Then using a special 02 sensor socket remove the sensor.
02SensorTool1.jpg

Remove front 02 Sensor Housing
Remove Shift Cable
Remove transmission cooler lines from transmission, I just squeezed the plastic clips by hand and pulled the hose out
Pry axles out of transmission, don't pull on the axle because you can separate the CV joint. Just pry on big cylinders on the axle ends away from the transmission housing

3. DROP SUBFRAME
Support Engine with a engine hoist, OR I had some 4x4 lumber I used it as a support
EngSupport1.jpg

For the first strap, Use the hook in the front of the engine and hook the other side in the exhaust opening in the exhaust manifold
For the Second strap put a bolt in the front head and and hook the other side in the exhaust opening in the exhaust manifold

EngSupport2.jpg

EngSupport3.jpg

Unbolt the 2 large bolts on the rack and support the steering rack so it doesn’t fall when subframe is lowered.

Steering03.jpg

Unbolt the swaybarlinks on both sides, then unbolted the tranny mount from the subframe, and the front and rear mount from the subframe.

Remove the flexplate Nuts for the Torque Converter.
Access the nuts though the opening were the starter used to be and rotate the engien to get to all 4 of them.

Converter01.jpg

Put jack under subframe.
Use 18MM socket and loosen the 4 subframe bolts. If the nut spins in subframe use a breaker bar and put it between the subframe and body and pull down on the subframe and that was enough force to keep the nut from spinnin

Put the spare tire jack under the transmission as far forward as possible. Drop the subframe completely and get the jack out of the way.

You can’t pull the subframe out because there is a jack under the transmission, so drag the subframe (forward) up against the jack and put another jack behind the subframe supporting the tranny/engine. remove the first jack and pull the subframe out. replace the original jack.

Unplug the wiring to the transmission, disconnect the shifter and speedo .
Unbolt 5 bolts transmission mounting bolts and lower trans carefully

Instead of a Sticky, why don't you start a Wikipedia.

I have several articles on the 3SI (3000GT/Stealth) forum Wikipedia.
Its almost as easy to create a Wikipedia entry as it is to post a message.
You don't clutter the forum with to many Stickies and the information is easy to find

Here is an article I did on 3Si on how to calculate the air flow signal adjustment percentage based on the before and after injector sizes.
Stock 3S ECUS are not reflashable so piggyback fuel controllers are very popular.

Transmission is almost out but The Driver's side subframe bolt is just spinning.

I tried prying subframe but its still spins. Its soaking in P.B. Blaster overnight so I hope that will do the trick. If not I'll get propane torch and heat the nutplate up to see if it helps.

Any other suggestions?

Is it the front or rear?? Propane ain't gonna do it........A 4.5" grinder with a cut off wheel will though. Then, you can at least get the subframe down and out of the way and give yourself more breathing room to go to work on the captured nut. If you need another bolt, I have some lying around and would be willing to give you one. PM me if you need. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out.

Hacksaw blade worked, I am just going to put in a big bolt. I removed the horns and there is a nice acess hole on the inside of the frame.

I just started drilling the broke studs out of the rear exhaust manifold. Then I broke the tapoff inside the hole. I am tired and quitting for the night.

Anyone have a suggestion for replacing the axle seals on the transmission? The service manual lists a special tool that I have never seen before.
