Did you ever find the manual? Fordcd.com is still not working.
I am going to change my 93 ATX on Sunday. I have done this for other cars so I'll just wing it if I have to. I did want to verify that the transmission can come out from the bottom w/o removing the engine.
I have a crappy Haynes manual that recommends pulling the enigine first then pulling the transmision. If dropping the trans out the bottom doesn't save a lot of time I might just pull the whole engine so that I can try to find some of the oil leaks in my trans and engine
THIS IS HOW I AM SWAPPING MY ATX TRANS ON 93 SHO
1. PREPARE YOUR CAR AND WORK AREA
Have car towed home while your children laugh at your misfortune
Try to convince your wife that the car should be fixesd with regular tools, not explosives!
2. REMOVE FRONT SPINDLES FROM CAR
Support car on Jackstands
Remove front wheels.
Unbolt tie rods and use a pickle fork to separate the Tie-Rod from the Spindle
Unbolt strut-rods on the subframe side the control arm on the subframe side and the knuckle pinch bolt,
Hang the caliper from my spring with a coat hanger then pull everything out as an assembly.
Then do the other side.
Put all of the bolts back in their threaded holes so they don't get lost.
Remove inner Fender on Driver's side. I use vice grips to pull the pin from the plastic clips.
3. REMOVE ACCESSORIES FROM ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Remove transmission pan to drain out fluid
Remove Starter
Remove front 02 Sensor.
First you have to undo the electrical connection.
Then using a special 02 sensor socket remove the sensor.
Remove front 02 Sensor Housing
Remove Shift Cable
Remove transmission cooler lines from transmission, I just squeezed the plastic clips by hand and pulled the hose out
Pry axles out of transmission, don't pull on the axle because you can separate the CV joint. Just pry on big cylinders on the axle ends away from the transmission housing
3. DROP SUBFRAME
Support Engine with a engine hoist, OR I had some 4x4 lumber I used it as a support
For the first strap, Use the hook in the front of the engine and hook the other side in the exhaust opening in the exhaust manifold
For the Second strap put a bolt in the front head and and hook the other side in the exhaust opening in the exhaust manifold
Unbolt the 2 large bolts on the rack and support the steering rack so it doesn’t fall when subframe is lowered.
Unbolt the swaybarlinks on both sides, then unbolted the tranny mount from the subframe, and the front and rear mount from the subframe.
Remove the flexplate Nuts for the Torque Converter.
Access the nuts though the opening were the starter used to be and rotate the engien to get to all 4 of them.
Put jack under subframe.
Use 18MM socket and loosen the 4 subframe bolts. If the nut spins in subframe use a breaker bar and put it between the subframe and body and pull down on the subframe and that was enough force to keep the nut from spinnin
Put the spare tire jack under the transmission as far forward as possible. Drop the subframe completely and get the jack out of the way.
You can’t pull the subframe out because there is a jack under the transmission, so drag the subframe (forward) up against the jack and put another jack behind the subframe supporting the tranny/engine. remove the first jack and pull the subframe out. replace the original jack.
Unplug the wiring to the transmission, disconnect the shifter and speedo .
Unbolt 5 bolts transmission mounting bolts and lower trans carefully
