I just purchased a 1993 Taurus SHO. It had some front end damage and who knows what else done to it. Where do I find a stamping or what not so I know exactly what motor I have? Its automatic so I guess its the 3.2, but I have no idea if it may of been changed out at some time for another year and I cant find any stamping or nothing to identify the motor. Few wires kind of dangling around makes me think it may be a motor from a different year or from a manual. Thanks in advance for any input.

if it has the original valve covers, the production date is in the code on the drivers end of the rear valve cover. look up that code and let us know what it says, then we can decode it for you.

I would give it a 99% chance of being a 3.2, there are always a few extra wires dangling in a SHO engine bay, and you'd have to be really desperate to put a 3.0 into a ATX.

If there is a egr system on the rear of the intake its a 3.2. Most likely an auto is 100% 3.2

Well, if for some reason the original 3.2 died, and all the PO could get his hands on was a 3.0 short block that he put all the 3.2 stuff on (reverse of a 3.2 MTX) then it would have EGR still.

That, and Cali MTX cars had EGR too, at least for some years.

The only way to tell for sure is to measure the diameter of the bore/piston, anything else could just be swapped parts.

Does your engine have two accessory belts? If one, 3.2. If two, 3.0.

Also look at the pullies for the accessory belt(s). Here are pictures of both engines with the pullies to look for circled. See the difference?

3.2 (photo by Off Road SHO)
Identification 32

I mean, sure people could have swapped accessories. I guess the only way to TRULY know is to give us some casting or ID numbers.

easiest way to tell is to look at the webbing at the bottom of the block near the oil pan. 3.2s have some extra webbing down there for whatever reason. or you could yank the oil pan and shine a flashlight up into the cylinder to see if KOB's on the side of the con-rod.

my 3.0mtx in my 91 has EGR. all California emissions spec SHOs came with EGR regardless of being ATX or MTX. and i know for a fact my engine is a 3.0.

but yes, there is a very good chance that if the engine is sporting EGR and an ATX it is probably a 3.2.

erm, whatever's bolted to the engine doesn't have anything to do with it's size. my car's got a 3.2, and it's got two belts and no EGR, the coil pack's level with the ground AND my DIS is centered on my crossover tube.

Isn't there a KOA/KOB stamping on the exterior of the block somewhere? I always thought there was...

Anyway, KOA = 3.0 and KOB = 3.2

Going to search around for the stamping on the block today. On the intake manifold its stamped KOA A7512 but the valve cover shows KOB 007875.

no, because the block casting is the same, just machined differently for the 3.0 or 3.2.
