I can vouch for Alex with the shift boot. I just used my original boot and console cover without any problems, and it looked fine.
Also, I did not have a resonator pipe handy when I did mine. I just sawz-all'ed the resonator off and drove open y-pipe to my local exhaust shop to fab up a mid-pipe. They even put two resonators in, one in front and one behind the shift box. It got rid of all that Yamaha rasp that I previously had. It didn't cost too much money either.
I'm interested in that welding trick though.
