How do you get the front Ecable off the car?

I found a brand new E cable on a car in the boneyard for my 92. I disconnected it at the pedel and pulled it through the floor. Disconnected it at the caliper as well. The cable goes through 2 brackets on the floor/

This is the 1st bracket. It is just behind the front tire. the bigger part of the cable is toward the front of the car, so the cable pulls out th front after it is piched smaller to go through the bracket BUT, below is the rear bracket (looking toward the rear) and from what I can see, it would pull out at the rear of the car. So what do I do here - it can only come out one way?

you have to squeeze all the metal fingers in toward its body to pull it out.

I see that but the problem is that you there are 2 brackets, once the metal fingers are squeezed on both the come out but on opposite ends. One comes out toward the front of the car, the other toward the back. If they both came out the back for example, there would be no problem.

its been a while since I looked at the cables closely, I seem to recall a sleeve connector between the brackets about under the drivers seat. get a couple of screwdrivers and pliers to open that coupling. something about moving a tab then sliding the slug to the center of the coupling to free it. or is the trick to adjust the cable for slack then just pull the slug to the center and release it? try seperating the cable at the parking brake pedal to release the tension. oh yeah, I always end up swearing at cable issues, that always seems to help

Well, I have already sworn at it a lot and it hasn't helped. I will try your suggestion though!

Don't worry about it - I have learned alot more from guys over 50 then I ever have from guys in their 20's!

So doing that, the Ebrake cable can be put back together again?

on my 95 there are 3 separate ebrake cables... 92 should be the same
one for the left rear, one for the right rear, and then the cable the links the 2 rear cables to the ebrake pedal.
If you are replacing the cable that clips into the ebrake pedal, you shouldn't have to disconnect any cables from the calipers (unless your doing 2 or 3).
As mentioned just pop the fingers and they will slide out... mine were badly corroded so I opted to hack and slash everything out before installing new cables.

OH also there should be a coupling type thing that connects the lead cable ends together... they are easy to snap together with vice grips but taking them apart without destroying them is sometimes tricky.

That's what was throwing me for a loop - it's the couplling thing I'm having an issue with. Any tips on "uncoupling" it

one pair of vice grips, and one pair of needle nose pliers worked for me. If its a bit rust its going to be hard to remove it without destroying it... the cable should have come with a new piece, unless someone stole it out of the box?

grab the base of the cable with the vice grips and try and snap the piece out as if you were breaking a twig in half; its tricky.

Well I got it. If anyone else is ever wondering, I put a picture of how the cables are connected. The picture shows the tab that needs to be lifted with a screw driver - you can see where I scratched it a bit. There was no rust and after the tab was lifted I pushed the cable toward the other one (Teh one where I did not lift thet tab) and they came apart with ease. Thanks for all your help.
