Okay I changed my water pump today (AI from Napa)…. Started the car filled up with antifreeze and filled the coolant tank. So I then proceeded to take the car for a ride… before I knew it my temp gage was at the red line!! I pulled over shut it down then started it up again cranked the heat and manage to keep it just below the read line all the way back home. Luckily it wasn’t far, I’d say I drove about a mile with the car just below red line. The problem was the car needed more coolant, but didn’t suck it out of the coolant tank. Anyway, the issue I have now is that even with the car properly filled with coolant, it still seems to run a little hot and when I hit the throttle there is this whistle type of noise, which wasn’t there before. Also, the temp gage can’t seem to find a happy place it is a bit jumpy, but it does stay within the “normal” range. The temp reading will range from the top of the R to the top of the A and seems to get the hottest when the car idles. Also at idle when I give it gas I can see the temp gauge jump up. I don’t think it did this before and I’m pretty sure it ran cooler too. I suppose it is possible because I may have never paid attention to it before, but I’m almost positive that the car is running hotter than it did in the past.

Okay my questions.. With the car basically overheating would it have toasted the thermostat? Is it possible that I did some sort of damage to the engine (which still seems to run just fine other than that whistle noise)? Could overheating have caused some seal, gasket or vacuum line to burst or rupture which could be causing that whistle noise. Lastly, could that water pump just be no good? I tried to save some money, since the price was 1/3 of the dealer's price. Or does anyone else have any other thoughts? Thanks….

I'm no expert but I think you can melt the gaskets or something. Did you try to get some of the air pockets out of the hoses. Not tring to sound like an ass but its the small thing that get you.

I did the same exact thing when I changed my water pump. The thing I did not do was put the coolant into the radiator it self. Did you do that? If not fill that bad boy up with some antifreeze and you should be all set. My temp gauge went up so fast I was scared. But, Everything worked out fine!

Yep, the bouncy needle suggests that there's still some air in the system. The temp sensor in the block is going from beind submersed in coolant to sitting in air. Keep driving it and keep adding coolant. It will eventually work itself out.

If you didn't change the thermo, I would do so. Good Idea. You don't want a thermo stuck open!

How tight should the belt be? Seems tight to me. Also, drove the car last night and today (both for about 45min at a time) seems to have worked itself out a little. Temp range was between the M and A on the gage. Didn't get up to the R this time. I will keep checking and adding coolant as needed.

Take off the radiator cap, start the car,and let it run.If the coolant bubbles and goes down, keep it filled.Put the cap back on when it starts to bubble from the heat. The air should be wirked out withing 5-10 minutes.
