I had the same issue a few months ago on my wagon and learned the auto delay switch was shot. The head lights were going on and off and by moving the delay switch up or down they were intermittently working. In a few days It shorted out and drained the battery. Before changing the manual headlight switch I suggest you pull out the auto delay switch (pulls right out) and disconnect it. I Think Your manual light switch should turn on your headlights lights with it disconnected. I replaced the delay switch assembly with a used replacement from Dan Barbush and it’s all back to normal. Good luck, Mike

Had the same exact problem with my Gen 1, turned out to be the headlight switch, replaced it for like $16 years ago and not one problem since. Piece of cake to swap out.

Does the plastic surround just pop out once screws are taking out or do I just have to finagle it?

Been so long that I don't remember...lol, I do remember that it only took me like an hour to change, all that time not driving at night because I never knew when they would turn off, for a simple fix. Hopefully this is all you need, good luck!

The delay switch is held in place by two strap tension straps on each side. Remove with a plastic pry bar or a flat putty knife/Scraper. Pops right out. Remove the electrical connector and see if the headlights operate without it connected. Easy Pezzy.

did you try checking the headlight switch yet, the switch k n o b pulls off and there is a nut holding it in place. the connector is known to melt and cause issues
Took the switch out and the connector melted alittle bit in the middle what do I do to get it working for now until I can go and get a new connector

Replacement of the connector and switch. Are you near a pull a part or Shosource near Vancouver, WA. If not, you can try contacting SV&HOdan on the forum.

The switch is the same on standard Taurus from 92 to 95, I think Sables as well

The 1995 has a much simpler diagram, where I've highlighted the circuit path if you've manually switched the lights on as indicated in the first post.

Light switch. Multi-function switch (hi/lo switch). The big square connector in front of the driver strut tower. Then all the ground wires bolted along the front radiator support.

Lights 1

I think this may be a grounding issue - i know that when I swapped my fog lamps to 100w units, after a while of driving/heating up my headlamps did the same thing - they came back the moment I turned off the fog lamps (side note - this is the reason to install relays for all headlamp/forward lighting on these cars)… for me it was a grounding issue, and I personally am of the belief that many more than we think of our problems with these cars are related to grounding.
