having huge brake fading problem

i was actually just wondering if every stock 94 atx sho haves a mushy pedal/brake fade when driving her hard. basically if i have to do a 60mph or higher stop then after wards the pedal gets really mushy. im assuming thats brake fade and im guess not all shos do that. if so how do i get rid of it. i have cheap autozone front pads on there right now and was going to order oem brake pads form ford. would that fix the problem or is there something else i have to do?

If and when you do your front brakes (and it sounds like they might need some servicing), you should seriously consider upgrading to the 96+ SHO brake package. All you need are the 96+ caliper brackets and some new larger pads, along with the larger rotors. And you ought to also consider changing the brake lines while you are at it. Then of course a complete bleeding of the system. IMO, the 96+ brake upgrade has to be one of the better mods value-wise you can do on your SHO, particularly when your front brakes need attention anyway. It has improved my SHO's braking considerably.

Even the cheapest, lowest quality brakes should give you decent stops from only 60 MPH. You may have serious problems, better get someone who knows brakes to look at it. Are all four wheels braking? Do a few stops, get out and hold you hand near each rotor. Both front the same? And rears the same? Smell something hot by any wheel? Any contaminates on the rotors? Oil, grease, whatever? Is the pedal mushy if applied while the car is sitting still? The vacuum booster can fail and give a soft feel. Ever bleed the system? Check it out, and be careful.

Im still VERY suprised that the lil' brakes on my '89 havent warped yet, or worse... :D

repeated heavy braking from 115+ down to 65 makes them howl like coyotes... and they fade tremendously. I guess Im letting them cool properly though... as they havnt warped yet

Big brakes are on the way though... a buddy of mine totalled his GL, and Im going to snag the calipers and rotors off of it once they get the insurance settlement

But I still need knuckles!

Sounds like they need to be bled. Do you have to pump them up to get a high pedal?

The pads are probably fine, and would probably not lead to what you're describing. As long as there's enough material on the pads, they shouldn't need to be changed.

ya the car has had a brake service done, it has new rotors front and rear brakes, fluid is really clean and lines are new. i bought the car with all of that done. the only thing is that when i bought the car the front rotors were rusted really bad same with the pads. thats when i changed the pads but not the rotors yet, the rotors have a good amount of rust on them but i didnt think that wouldve cause a problem like that but i bet im wrong. i still have to check the back brakes cause i might have the same rust problem that i had with the front ones.
