I'm changing the rod bearings due to a nasty sounding knock coming from the lower end of the engine. I only have 60K on the vehicle so i was surprised at what i saw. All the upper bearings had copper showing, anywhere from 1/2" to 1" inch in length. 2 of the lowers were starting to show a small amount of copper. Where can you get the cap bolts? I read somewhere in forum that they should be replaced, and no go at NAPA.

Man all you people talking about rod bearings is makin' me nervous. I guess I am going to have to take a look at my 95's 72,000 mile bearings and see how they are doing.

You think I should look at them even though my motor sounds and runs great?

Cheap preventetive maintenence and resetting the clock on this normal wear item? Yes!! Plus it will be good experience for all the other cars you will ever own that you care about.

If you are only going to torque the bolts once after installing the new bearings, the existing bolts should be fine. Be sure to tighten the cap nuts in stages to the final torque to ensure the cap is evenly seated on the crank journal.

Normal engines with proper maintenance and a good oil history should be good for 150,000 miles before the rod bearings are worn. However, there have been several instances where the bearings have been badly damaged long before this mileage mark. I repalced my original bearings at 269,000 miles with no audible rod knocking noises. The bearings were worn into the copper though and the resulting engine was smoother and quieter through the rev range. For the $44.94 worth of parts, this was cheap insurance.

I hope that you are talking about the nuts for the rod bolts, and not the bolts themselves. Do not remove any rod bolts from the connecting rods. I would reuse the rod nuts and follow Scotts directions.

For rod bearings, check out the latest (March 2003) copy of Hotrod Magazine (pretty sure, I just picked it up and started looking). It has a silver new Mustang on the front. Inside is an article about bearings in general, and shows some pictures of heavy bearing damage! eek!
