Got codes...also, where is the SPOUT connector?

I finally did both KOEO and KOER tests today.

KOEO:
  • 14 (PIP circuit failure. Suspect PIP sensor or TFI module, or grounding or interference problems at the TFI module)
  • 49 (SPOUT signal defaulted to 10 degrees BTDC; SPOUT ciruit open)

KOER:
  • 21 (ECT out of self-test range)
  • 41 (HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean (rear))
  • 73 and 25 (25 means knock sensor not detected and 73 means i didn't goose it hard enough, which kicked out the 25)

I also did the Cylinder Balance test, and it told me cylinders 1 and 3 are weak, which I'm thinking has something to do with the 41 code.

My questions: can anyone help translate these codes?

Also, where is the SPOUT connector? I found one unused female connector near the back (driver's) side of the rear head; the connector itself is oval-shaped, and has a rectangular clip around it. It sits right on a wiring harness, with almost no slack in its wiring; it runs right into the harness. I'm thinking it has something to do with the EGR system because right next to it are threaded holes consistent with the location of the EGR valve/tube on CA cars.

This is not one that I have had to research on my own. I would call a Ford service shop and ask for a SHO-knowledgable technician who works on the engine control system. Please let us know what you find out. I would also like to know where the SPark OUTput is.

I have a 91 and I know one of the spout connetors comes out of the wiring just to the left of the air cleaner under the heater hose. It has about 3 inches of wire before the small rectangular socket. The connector is just a little piece of usually gray rectangular plastic. Sometimes it has black fabric tape on it to ensure it doesn't come off. For some reason I was thinking that mine had two of them but it's too dark out right now to tell.

No problem, Scott. I'll make notes on what I do and find as I dive into the SHO's wiring. I don't have the Helms book, but I have an EVTM (Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual), so that'll help a lot.

Munkee...thanks; I'll check that out.

PIP stands for Profile Ignition Pickup. On our cars, it's also known as the Cranshaft Position Sensor (CPS). It's a sensor located behind the main pulley at the front of the engine, way down low. It's connected to the crankshaft and senses where the cylinders are oriented. This signal, along with the camshaft position sensor and DIS module tell the computer when to fire what plug. The SPOUT error could cause a problem with this sensor, but I'm not for sure.

The spout that you're looking for is on the passenger side, to the right and behind the strut tower. It may be burried. Also, sometimes they drop down and rest on the rear exhaust manifold and melt into a ball of goo, which could cause this code. It does look like a rectangular connector with a plug in the end of it....yours may not have the plug.

The ECT sensor is your Engine Coolant Temperature. That sensor is located below and forward of the throttle body near the neck that attaches to the upper coolant hose. It's a small sensor with a simple single wire connector coming off of it. It could be bad, or your coolant may not have been warm enough when you ran the test.

HEGO sensor error is your O2 sensor. Easy to get to and replace. The rear one is more difficult, but it's located on the Y-Pipe, half way between the catalytic converter and the exhaust manifold. It's a sensor that screws into the y-pipe itself. Replace with a crescent wrench. Unplug it first, then unscrew it.

The last two codes are probably just because of a botched goose test.

Not sure what to tell you about the cylinder balance test or what it's telling you.

What are your symptoms, as far as what's wrong with the car??

The symptoms it has are mainly just bad gas mileage, and noticeable loss of power, almost like it's not running on all 6 cylinders. And I know I flubbed the goose test; my foot was sitting between the gas and brake when I went to goose it, and I didn't get the gas down far enough.

Oh...a few minutes ago I was out exploring under the hood, and found a connector with a cap on it on the passenger side of the engine bay, up near the firewall. It has a male/female connection in it, i.e., a prong coming out and a place next to it for a similar prong to plug in. The plug itself is round. Would this be close to what I'm looking for?
