OK, this one is stumping me and my g/f's brother, who installs car stereos as a side job. Anyway, I have all stock in my car, with the exception of the head unit (Pioneer DEH-P1100), and the subwoofer (10" Jensen tube from Wal-Mart). The tube actually sounds nice, but for some reason it sounds the best if there is a lot, I mean A LOT of airspace around the sub. With the trunk closed and all windows up and everything, there is virtually no bass. But when I open the trunk, or even a car door, the sound gets much fuller and deeper. I've tried a few different positions for the tube with little or no change in effect. And also, it's a ghetto-rigged sub since it's 4 channel and only using the factory sub amp. Is this sub just poorly designed, or is there something I'm missing? TIA

Seems the sub is poorly designed. Try keeping the port of it facing the rear bumper. This way you will get the bass bouncing into the car. If the ports are facing any other way it will just bounce all around the trunk.

Actually What it might be is that the sub is just to weak to cause the trunk to put out the bass. Most bass tubes are not very good and when you have it hooked up to a low power amp thats not desgined for this you will not get a lot of power.
Something else is that I had a friend that decided to run in series the back speakers and a pair of subwoofers from the head unit off of the rear power source. IT cause him a lot of problems, his CDs came out very hot and sometimes the head unit would cut out.

93redATX,
Since you got the 10" sub woofer did you remove the factory sub woofer in the middle of the rear deck & just hook the wires up to the 10"?

Let us know how you make out I'm interested in trying the same.

Jon-
Yes, I took out the factory sub & enclosure in the middle. I wouldn't recommend going the route I did though, cause running a 4-channel sub off a 2 channel amp is not a good idea. I figured that since it's a cheap tube and only the factory amp, I don't mind if I burn it out. Drop me a line if you want me to describe more in depth about the procedure. ([email protected])

Bass tubes are a very poor attempt to make a vented enclosure the air space inside of tube is less than half of what is recommended they do this to consirve space. What you are doing by opening the window or trunk is leting the sub have more room to breath making up for this tiny enclosure witch it is in . In a properly bult enclosure you will notice little to no gain by opening the window or door
