Got a problem here

Rust!?!?!? On a 98!!!WTF!

Now I checked every other possible areas to see if there is rust anywhere else, well there isnt. It is just right along the seam for the moonroof. The car is going to Ford tommarow and it looks like we are gonna have the affected area sanded and repainted. This car is underwarrenty, but why in the **** is this happening in this area. This strikes me as odd. This car its whole life has been taken care of to the highest degree. Constantly waxed constantly cleaned always garageded.

Anyone else with this issue along the seam?

Maybe the seam should have been sealed from the factory?

Hard to tell. My mom lives in Lansing Michigan and her cars even though low miles are prone to early rust due to salt on the streets. Could this be a factor?

Mine has shown a bit of blistering, though no rust due to the galvanize, along the inside edge of the trunk lid. Of course, we have tons of salt put on the roads every year here, and in truth it is not at all unusual for a 3-5 year old car to have started rusting in Nova Scotia. Sometime this summer I will open the blisters, scrub it all down, and prime and paint it. But up here, ther is nothing abnormal about rust in areas where the salt can get and and degrade the paint.

did you leave your roof open in the rain? that coulda done it.

i doubt its anything to get your britches twisted about. good that its getting fixed, but i dont know if its got any kind of warranty.

No my dads 98 SHO has been and always had the best and ultimate care. Nothing careless about our car. Never left the sunroof open never drove it through a snowstorm. Always waxed, always pampered. I think it has to do with the fact that the seam is kinda open and not closed up. If you look at the seam it doesnt appear to be fully sealed allowing moister in through the bottom. I wish I would have seen this earlier, I would have sealed it up.

What I want to know is what lead you to think there was a problem, for you to tear off the edgeing to look for this? oh_my

Yes, there is, but after the first few years it does not cover things like blistering or surface rust, only actual perforations. So if you have a hole rusted through, it might still be under warranty. I forget how long that extended. It is worth remembering, these cars are not young anymore. A '96 Gen III is now seven and a half years past the introduction of the model. The last model year '99s are now four and a half model years old, headed for five fast. Nothing lasts in like new condition forever if it actually gets used, and things on cars do wear out, rust, require replacement, etc. I normally plan on at least $1000 in maintenece work per year on any car over three years old, and consider myself lucky if it comes out less than that. All the Gen IIIs are a older than that these days.

My '97 SHO was rusting on the underside of the hood(not on the edge either...Nice big spot in the middle) and on the bottom of the right rear door. Ford would not do anything about it, as the car was out of warranty(duh!).

What kills me is the fact that I hadn't driven the car in the winter for 2 years, and I always kept the car clean and waxed, and always wiped down the insides and bottoms of the door, trunk, and hood jambs.
