Ok, got the new deck all wired up and it works a-ok. But I thought the damn thing was supposed to slide in and fit similarly to the stock deck... transfer the while "hanger" onto the new deck, slide it in until the metal tabs on the side click behind the opening and done. I've worked the wiring harness behind the stereo for all I can, and I still can't get the deck in far enough. And even if I could, I'm not sure those little metal tabs will actually hold it in place.

Can you tell I've NEVER done this before? I assume I need to get some kind of mounting kit... anyone point me in the right direction?

you need a BFH

But really, are you sure you are not just hanging up on the harness, or the antenna cable? Sometimes it is fun getting all of that wiring stuffed in there tight enough to fit a deck in front of it. Almost every time I try to install a deck, the damned antenna cable gets hung up or bound up.

Maybe try test fitting the deck with the harness not attached? Just stuff the harness (from the car) into the dash, along with the antenna cable, and see if the deck slips in easier.

simply just the depth of some decks won't allow it to fit. i know sony likes to cram alot in their heads and they're usuall pretty long. also the metal sleeve that came with the head unit is the only one it will snap into (and it's strong enough to hold it in). if you are using another sleeve, it won't click in. and also the clip on the back takes space and really isn't needed as the metal bar inside the slot supports the head enough. you only should need it if you plan on bumping your car like a monster truck. the head length could be causing the clip to bump into the other one, blocking it from going farther. on the stock system the bottom slot clip slid in first (with your coin tray/pocket) and the top slot last, both sharing the same support bar. the new head could be trying to push the clip past the other one that won't budge.

you're not trying to put in the metal sleeve and the deck at the same time are you? that won't slide in, or hold, youve got to put in the sleeve, bnd down the support tabs to hold it in place, then slide the deck in. also are you installing it in the top din slot or the bottom? if in the top you can try to shove some of the wires around whatever's in the bottom, there's room for them down there, but almost none behind and above. hope that made sense

Ok... by metal sleeve are you referring to the black trim section that snaps on the front of the unit?

I'll take some pics when I get home... I bought this deck off ebay so it's possible I'm missing some parts. The upside... it was CHEAP

The downside: Now that I have a working stereo I see I need some new speakers too :bonk:

Are you using that plastic white thing? If so, don't use it. I have found it won't make the deck fit, well at least mine didn't when I put it on my deck. It fit perfectly without it.

On my '91 there is a sliding tab that hangs down behind the deck and has a hole in it for a stud. The stud just screws in at the back of the deck and a nut holds it in place. My deck wouldn't slide in properly until I connected the old deck's stud to the back hole of my new deck and finger-tightened it. Then it slid in perfectly.

However, on my old '91+, the p/o decided to cut off the tab in question and that deck fit perfectly fine. IMO it's a matter of preference.

Finally, if you don't have a DIN sleeve (pictured above), you will need a Sony one to hold the deck in the slot.

ive installed a deck using the tab/slide thing, and without, and personally see no difference in strength/vibration when its without, plus, removing it makes the install easier. the DIN sleeve, with the emtal DIN opening is strong enough

just call up sony and ask for one. it's like $5 and arrives in 3 days. i don't think they are deck specific but have your model/serial number handy just in case.

Mine's a PITA to get in too. I just had to kinda cram it in there and sometimes it want to pop out on its own.
