The braided steel cable has begun to fray where it emerges from the cable housing.

The item is no longer available from Ford (obsolete ), and I have not found one in searching several salvage yards. Short of ordering one sight-unseen from online, has anyone come across a good quality replacement cable, or even a repair kit (ie. new internal braided line and crimpable-end-pieces), short of fabricating my own cable from scratch.

Has anyone tried adapting one from one of the non-SHO applications?

hmm this is interesting... FWIW i think alot of brake cables from bicycles are very similar... but you would have to repair the cable with the exact same length cable, or else you will have problems with the cable holding the throtlle open, or not opening fully at WOT...

you might be best off finding a parts car to take the cable from...

Already did

It's not the length of cable - that's easy to match. The difficulty is in matching the cable diameter, and in this case, finding the correct end that goes into the return-spring assembly. It's not a crush/crimp end-fitting, and appears to use some type of hard-solder.

I have that exact problem. I don't see what could've really caused it. Luckily, though, I have a parts car to pull mine from.:p Good luck with getting what you need!

Try a speedometer shop or a place that makes mechanical controls. In the Phoenix area there is Dick's Speed-o-tach that will make up anything you need. When I was making my hydraulic cable pulling rig, I needed to control the gas motor that sat on the front of the rig from the rear. PTO Sales in Tempe made exactly what I needed.

Google "push-pull cables" or "speedometer cables" with your closest large city and see what you get.

I got one from checker or AZ I can't remember which, but it is just right and less than $30 IIRC. I believe that NAPA CSK and AZ all have it avalible but it is a special order item.

I know this is a blind stab-in-the-dark  but you don't still have the receipt, do you?

No, I don't have the reciept, and I didn't see any markings on it. Based on looks and price I am almost positive I got the Beck/Arnley p.n. 0930651 from Checker.

I will be in there within the next few days, and will see if they can look it up based on customer history.

That's the clutch cable - even if the length is correct, the cable-ends are not - but please still check, as several here will be very grateful.

Oops, I'm an idiot I thought you needed a clutch cable, now I realize It says throttle cable :nut: I too need a throttle cable and will be checking the junkyards first, then will be trying one of the places Tom mentioned. If you can wait a while I can get an extra one from the JY if possible, or find out how much it would be to have one made if I have to go that route. I will be digging into my project within the next couple of months; here is a pic of why I need a throttle cable:slight fire

Already have the numbers (and some of those cables), but some of the year-groupings look different than what I have (I check tomorrow).

Tried DPN and PV, none available, nowhere...

What the **** did Ford do with these when they obsoleted them, throw them in the dumpster....

Just to let you know the 92 is the cut off year for different throttle cables. I found one at the junkyard and I had just raided an 89 not too long ago.

I have the same number for the MTX, one additional number for the ATX. The F4DZ--A part number supercedes the F3DZ--B part number, but only lists the years 94-95. The only Gen I/Gen II throttle cable that has not been obsoleted [yet], is for the 1993-95 3.8L [5F1Z-9A758-A] - why, I don't know. Maybe the dumpster was full........

E9DZ-9A758-B / 1989-90 MTX SHO
F1DZ-9A758-E / 1991-92 MTX SHO
F3DZ-9A758-D / 1993-95 MTX SHO
F3DZ-9A758-B / 1993-95 ATX SHO
F4DZ-9A758-A / 1994-95 ATX SHO

The Gen I/Gen II MTX cables that I've looked at are identical with the exception of the firewall grommet. The Gen I uses a round grommet that simply snaps into place from the engine compartment side (and is a real pita to get to release!). The Gen II has an elongated oval shaped grommet that is secured to the firewall with screw from the firewall side.

Anyone have any information on the length of the various cables?

In continuing my search for a replacement throttle cable, I have dug-up additional Ford part numbers, but have not been able to find much in the way of complete application information.

So,.....

.... if anyone has any information to add on the following OEM part numbers, please, please, please post whatever information and documentation you have.

Here is the current OEM part number list I've compiled:

F3DZ-9A758-D / 1993-95 MTX SHO
F1DZ-9A758-E / 1991-92 MTX SHO
E9DZ-9A758-B / 1989-90 MTX SHO
F4DZ-9A758-A / 1994-95 ATX SHO
F3DZ-9A758-B / 1993-95 ATX SHO

F4DZ-9A758-B / 1994-95 3.0L non-SHO
F4DZ-9A758-??/ 1994-95 3.8L non-SHO
5F1Z-9A758-A / 1993-95 3.8L non-SHO

F3DZ-9A758-C / 1993-95 3.8L non-SHO
E9DZ-9A758-A / ????-??
E9DZ-9A758-C / ????-??
E9DZ-9A758-D / ????-??
F2DZ-9A758-B / ????-??

F6DZ-9A758-A / 1996 3.0L OHC
F6DZ-9A758-B / 1996-98 3.0L DOHC
F6DZ-9A758-C / 1996-99 3.4L SHO

Again, anyone have any information on the length of the various cables?

Okay, still trying to work out a solution for Gen I/II throttle cables.

IF ANYONE HAS *ANY* OF THE ABOVE THROTTLE CABLES THEY WOULD BE WILLING TO PART WITH, I AM BUYING USED CABLES OF KNOWN ORIGIN, TO TRY TO MATCH COMMONALITY. If you have a parts car out-back, or a spare cable you're not using, I would like to buy it so I can directly compare each of the cables for which I have part numbers above (and even then some).

IF YOU HAVE A SPARE CABLE BUT ARE NOT WILLING TO PART WITH OR A NEW OEM CABLE HARNESS ASSEMBLY YOU BOUGHT, PLEASE PM me the engineering part number stamped into the cable sheath, which is usually within 12" of the throttle-end of the cable.

I suspect that some of the cables may be interchangeable, but until I get more cables in hand, won't know for sure. Regardless, with *no* options currently available, it won't be long before people begin parking their SHOs due to lack of a throttle cable assembly.

from memory, Lokar will make you a custom cable, adjustable even. Cost was ~$200 a few years ago. You will have to provide them the ends they'll need to match, and a length range.

I have a replacement cable (courtesy of Dan - thanks !!! :hail:).

However, there currently are no sources and I think many are not going to pay $200 for a $25-$50 throttle cable. There has to be better alternatives, and it's just a matter of pooling information, before someone stumbles onto a replacement solution.

Remember, there were over 2.6 million Gen I/II Taurii built, and currently no available options for replacement cables for *any* of them. It's quite possible, that one of the non-SHO applications will have a cable that is a direct fit or can be easily modified to fit - hence my call/request for cables.
