Hi all,
I didn't find any posts on this, but has anyone had any first hand knowledge of intake valve build-up? I've seen a couple of You Tube videos about build-up on the intake valves with GDI engines. I recently saw that Castle is coming out with a product called GDI/IVD Clean. It isn't out yet, but I did find that CRC makes a similar product. Here's a link to it on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/CRC-05319-In...d+clean&qid=1554652477&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmr0
I put in an oil can so that should help... or maybe even eliminate the issue?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Best case. Remove intake and walnut blast the valves. Then use a good synthetic oil along with a catch can going forward.

The cleaners have been know to damage the turbos. This is why the new gen GDI motors have the pre injectors.

Thanks! I doubt I have any significant build-up, there's only 9000 on the clock. I'm using Castrol Edge synthetic and do have a catch can, although just recently installed. I'm just being proactive and keeping on top of it before any significant build-up occurs.

Get a good catch can. I dont care what other people say about having a can or not. I like the UPR can personally. Change your oil often (I change mine every 3k religiously).

Every 3k miles this comes out of my can. I DO NOT what to be recirculated through the motor and burnt onto my valves. PERIOD.

I change my oil once a year, so that's less than 3000 miles. I just put the catch can on a couple hundred miles ago, so no sense in checking it yet. I went with the JLT can.
Here's what I found on Amazon's FAQ page of the CRC cleaner:
Question:
Has anyone used this product on a 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine? I'm considering using it on a new vehicle with this engine as preventative maintenance.

Answer:
I have used this on my 3.5 Ecoboost several times with no issues, and know of several others who have used this on their Ecoboosts. I spray it directly into the throttle body down stream of the turbos. My understanding, from what I've gathered from talking with others, is Ford was worried about chunks of carbon breaking off and damaging the turbos. However, if there is carbon built up already, some is already randomly breaking off and going through the turbine side of the turbo, anyways. If they are worried about the carbon breading off and damaging the compressor side of the turbo, then I'd like to see an explanation of how that happens when the carbon chunk would have to fight the direction of air flow and make if through the intercooler, as well. I've also heard the induction servicing could cause bearing wash, but since this stuff says it is safe to use on on turbos, and there is nothing special about these Borg Warner turbos that would make them more susceptible to bearing wash than other vehicles running Borg Warner turbos, I wouldn't be afraid. There are other things that are more likely to cause your turbos to fail. I'll also mention I have 185,000 miles on this vehicle and the turbos are still strong as ever.

I went to the CRC website and their product specifically claims to be a turbo cleaner also.

Do some research maybe CRC has figured something out. I don't know about it yet, and I stay on top of things like that. There are many stories about turbo failures after solvent cleaning...so yeah.

One of the things I want to do is pick the brain of the mechanic I know at the dealer. I'd be willing to bet he's got some experience with some high mile GDI engines. Good idea to take a thorough look into the product.

If your doing this with a low mileage vehicle as preventative maintenance I won’t worry about it being an issue. If you already have a bunch of gunk built up it’s probably not going to do anything for you and might cause a chunk to break off. At that point you are scrubbing the valves.

Hmm- I have a borescope and a stock SHO with around 45K miles on it. Would be a good candidate for the scope.

Can I get a scope into the intake tracts easily through the TB, or is it too contorted of a path?

Yup, 2010 with 40k, hardened deposits scoured the heads. Pulling heads and remachining was as much as a re-mfg motor. Got new motor.
This was all due to carbon buildup. I had changed oil every 5k.
I can’t beleive Ford has no valve clean service like walnut blasting. bMW does.
As said earlier, 3k oil change , full synthetic.
I’m not doing catch can as I don’t need Ford to void something when I now have a warranty motor.
I fought with Ford on this( mom is 25 year ford employee) and got nothing.
Avoid above scenario!

Remove the CC before you take it for service. There is zero way for them to know you had one.

Can we get a simple description of the catch can configuration, photos if anyone would like to share?
