Hi,

Just curious if anyone has ever attempted to swap out/in a gauge panel from a 90-95 into an '89? The gauge panel is the only thing I don't like about my car...I like the post-90 much better.

Edit: In case it's unclear, I don't want to swap out the dash...just the instrument panel

Thanks,

Ben

I think it would work with some modifications. I don't have the wiring diagrams for an '89 right in front of me so I cant tell you if it will plug right in or not. If it plugs in, mounting it would not be that bad. Just cause it looks like it won't fit does not mean it cannot fit, look at the stuff I put in my car that is not "suppose" to fit.

Before I'd swap anything, I'd be inclined to take advantage of that 220 MPH speedo while I still got it. :D

If you don't like your 89 instrument cluster, go find a wrecked sable that has a Electric Spedometer. And it should just plug right in.

For anyone who cares, I tried putting in a 90 cluster into my 89 one afternoon. I didn't get as far as to bolt it up, but I wanted to see if the gauges worked or not. The plugs don't plug in right, but I took a utility knife and cut slots in the back of the cluster, so the plugs would plug in. (if you were in there, you know what I'm talking about) The pin outs must not be the same because the tach didn't move when the car was started. More than likely you could find a diagram and make it all work, but it was getting late, and I was getting tired. I decided to slap it back together with the 89 cluster instead.

Does the digital cluster display speed above 99mph? Or RPMs above 7K?

If not, I don't know if I'd want it...

Also, what year Sables have the compatible cluster?

Thanks again,

Ben

The digital cluster in the older first gens will not plug right in. The analog cluster has 2 connectors and the digital cluster had 3 connectors. I have had both types apart before and have seen it first hand. If you wanted to to a digital conversion like I did on my '90 I don't see why that would not be possable but just don't expect it to be plug and play.
