Sometimes, when I release the clutch to takeoff while in first gear from a complete stop, the front end shudders violently no matter how carefully I feather the release of the clutch.

This happens when I take off at a usual speed - I'm not racing.

The only thing to then do is to engage the clutch again to stop the shuddering and try again. Usually on the second time, the front end shakes a little initially then stops and I can fully release the clutch. The shuddering, shaking, vibration is not as violent this time.

The motor mounts are new. The engine doesn't move when I perform the motor mount test - looking through the gap in the raised hood as I try to go forward or backward when I release the clutch with the brake on.

This only happens when starting from a full stop, never in any gears as I drive. The clutch engagement feels and shifts ok in every gear, even when starting from a stop, and the transmission seems ok.

The strange thing is that this doesn't happen all the time when starting from a complete stop. It's random.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

A friend suggested that the front suspension may be the problem. I haven't replaced struts in ages.

:salute:

Isn't that usually replaced during clutch replacement?

Is it worth it to replace just that if you are going to get that involved or should you do a clutch job while you're at it.

I've never done a clutch job although I would like to. Hopefully I can find someone familiar with the SHO who is willing to do clutch replacement and pay him rather than a dealer mechanic - then I can learn also.

What are the consequences of doing nothing and waiting until ______ happens. That is, what eventually will happen (!) if this continues without repair.

Thanks.

Well, if that is what's causing the problem, eventually you will not have a clutch.
I bought an 89 that needed a clutch but the throw out bearing was the main culprit. It was shot. It was mangled and in many pieces.
And it usually is replaced during a clutch job, as well as the engine rear main seal.
