How long ago was this discussed? Considering how little support there currently is for the 3.4 I'd have to say you would be spending 2 to 3 times what the car is worth to have something like that done. Add to that price for repairs down the road having come from FPS. I wouldn't have them do anything to my car. PM me if you want further details.
I have to agree with the above. Not only have I not heard anything of this, it seems to me that this far down the road on these the demand would be so low that the cost would just be huge and I doubt it could be done from any sort of business sense. These were remarkable cars for their times and are still very cool vehicles, but the newest of them is now 20 years old and the number still on the road to do the cam sprocket problem is likely only a few thousand.
Boost is easier, but 4.0l is achievable. These aren't overly complicated engines, but like mentioned there is a significant cost to doing a one off. If the price of a crate engine isn't scary, then you'd probably be able to find someone to build up an engine.
I'd think it make more sense to just use a different engine with more room to grow, if boost wasn't the way to go.
I have no direct experience, but from my research a subframe swap with the '95-02 Lincoln Continental 4.6L FWD would be doable. I believe it has been done successfully more than once. You'd then have many of the same options of the mustang.
You know, we often forget how much love the SLO's got. Because of their cast block they can take a lot, even though they weigh in more than our aluminum. If more power is to be had there are actual aftermarket kits for the Vulcan. Not sure about the Duratec.
A Morana stroker kit will easily reach 300HP naturally asparated. Couple that with a quality turbo and tune it could easily reach near Gen5 SHO power.
Donor blocks are sprinkled throughout the junk yards. Couple that to a SHOSource Tranny and you are a whole new SHO for under $10k and a whole lot less custom fabing.
Having said that, I still wish someone had the same for our engine. I've been playing around with the idea myself, but haven't put the effort in.
One of those things I think about doing (via pipe dream) no doubt with ample input from SHO vets who will likely be dead by the time I retire and have time to delve in . . .
I would think that after almost a year, if Doug were even thinking about a 4L conversion, he'd have found out about this thread and would have chimed in by now. He might be so busy with late model truck work that G3 SHOs just get hind ***. He seems a competent business guy and that just makes business sense . . . sadly for us.
Thanks zak for the links. Interesting they say the two motors are not related but admit to the match in dimensions. I'm sure it's related to FMC's intent to get all G3 SHOs off the road, as we represent a "sweeping under the rug" of a flawed design that was not legitimately reconciled with their customers (as well documented on v8sho.com). Anyway, that dog won't hunt anymore . . .
