I am concidering getting a rockford fosgate 15 inch sub or maybe even some kinda of 18. I am wondering if anybody has tried to fit these size subs in the trunk of our cars, and if they fit.

Any of it will fit, it just depends on how much room you willing to lose and how much money you want to spend.

I can spend around 300 for the sub itself. then the price of a box. I would still like some room to put stuff in the back.

Should i go with 2 12's instead?

Yes. It will be a little wider, but not quite as tall as the 18" sub. 18" just sounds a little obnoxious. I think 2 12"s would do the job just fine.

FWIW, I have an M/T box with 2 10's in it at home that a former tenant left behind. I put the box in my trunk to transport it, and it's too big to fit in the rear seat passage opening. IMHO, if you never use the seat pass-throughs, this would be a good place to try and fit a box, because it's fairly deep, though narrow, and you would still have a decent amount of trunk space left.

I, however, use my pass-through quite often, and use the trunk quite a bit, and can't afford to lose any trunk space.

Of course, the question that hasn't been asked yet (since I like playing Devil's advocate), is what about an amp? $300 on a sub will get you a decent sub, then a box, but without an amp, all show, no go...

Space is all about what you personally are willing to lose. You can spend a little more cash on a low Q sub woofer, which means it needs less air space and have the best of both worlds. You'll have to forgive me because I haven't been doing much in the way of buying any new audio stuff in the past while. I do know that if you can find a JL Audio 12W6, you can fit it in the spare tire well and have it fiberglassed in. Then an amp with a true 250 to 300 watts and you would be very happy.

I am actually using one of these subs right now:

It is in a 1 cubic foot box and I am running the same brand amp that is pushing in the neighborhood of 1100 watts. I was pretty impressed with the amp because I just bought it from one of my reps to try it. IT's rated output 4 ohm bridged said 1200 watts. I figured there was no way but like I said, it actually measured 1100 watts at the speaker.

Here is the amp where it is installed:

I don't have any pics of the sub box but I can take one if needed. It is a very basic sloped box that I built and just put in the trunk. My rear deck is also vented to allow the sound to come through a bit better. Here is a pic of it:

Lastly is my CD player which is fiberglassed in front of the shifter. Here is the pic of it:

bigger is not better in car audio subs. The largest speaker I would recomend using in ANY car is a 12 inch. My preference is still for a pair of high quality 10s.
