The y-pipe and udp would be your best first mods as they do add the most hp.

Anything else you should do, make sure your maintence is up to date, rod bearings then 60k's. I'd spend the money there first then do your mods later.

Then, enjoy. Just my .02 cents. ;)

rod bearings and 60k service was done just before i got the car, oil pump. front seal, timing belt, cam seals, valve lash, water pump, crank sensor, intake gaskets, boots, valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, and some other stuff so it should be pretty up to ***** to start the fun stuff

If you are planning more mods an lpm could help. With the udp you could raise your rev limiter, but with the stock cams you won't make a lot of power after 7k anyway. I would say an lpm is not a first mod in a mtx. I put a sb stage 3 in my car and so far it is great. Peddle is only slightly heavier than stock and it grabs well. With your mods it is kind of over **** though. Don't forget to get the ceramic throw out bearing instead of stock. Have fun.

yea i know the clutch is overkill i dont like doing things over and over again so im going for gold with the clutch, i may try a 75 shot of nitrous on it at some point so i figure the clutch is good insurance

is a cold air and a 80mm tb worth anything on these cars, i have a bunch of stuff from my mustang and can build my own cold air intake, i figure at least the cold air would sound cool even if its worth no power

With a little work I.E. intake work and a LPM, Yes they are. From what Ive read/ played with the CAI isn't really worth unless you plan on cutting up your finder to get it out of the engine bay and then its picking up extra dust and grit(******* the engine). The stock intake does work very well, if you want a better sound i recommend removing the silencer cone in the intake. A search will bring that up.

The stock intake is already a cold air intake. For sound remove the silencer cone. A k&n panel in the stock air box will increase the intake sound as well. The power gains from a k&n is pretty much non existent. A lot of people just stick with the paper one since the k&n only flows better than the paper when clean and only filters better than paper when it's dirty. There is also the issue with getting oil on the Maf from it. The larger tb probably isn't going to gain you anything.....maybe a little throttle response.

to run a bigger MAF, you need a tune. basically, once you replace the y-pipe and pullies, power gains per part are tiny unless you throw something else on to compliment it...i.e. PnP intake w/BBBs will be noticeable, but don't really shine until you throw some cams in. believe it or not, deviating from the stock airbox will likely cause you to LOSE power. there's a thread somewhere showing the absolute best setup to be the stock airbox with the fender box removed. my personal reccommendation would be to do a y-pipe, pullies, airbox surgery...then focus on making it go around corners QUITE nicely. if your goal is to build a stop-light terror and test-n-tune dominator, sell the SHO and buy a DSM. drag cars they are not.

In his post he asked about an 80mm throttle body....he may have ment a Maf though. I say don't mess with the intake besides removing the silencer cone. I have lost power by trying to create a better intake. 8 whp from reduced air flow up top. Tweaking the brakes and suspension will make the car a TON more fun to drive. I did my suspension last and if I had it to do over again I would do it first.

Suspension, suspension, suspension. That's where it's at with these cars. Put the y pipe on and forget the rest. You can spend $1500 in mods on one of these cars and maybe net yourself 15 hp. Just not worth it. If your a "handy" kind of guy, hone and bore the intake yourself.

A well maintained stock SHO is what you described. Honestly, do the y-pipe and exhaust. Upgrade parts as maintenance is needed. Then you will have a quick car that pulls strong and gets good mileage while carting around the family. Otherwise you are going to wind up with a quick car that pulls strong and gets not as good mileage while carting around the family.

making a SHO competitively quick (as compared to today's sports sedans) is rather expensive unless you mount a metallic purple bottle in your trunk. anything else and you'll be lookin at spendin at least $3k, even with most work done yourself. do exhaust, gut your airbox, swap a 3.2, underdrive pulies, and enjoy the sound of 6800rpms.

One thing you may want to consider is that with a cat-less y-pipe you will lose some low rpm torque and gain a little more high rpm torque over a catted y-pipe. The LPM will not give you much more peak power however it can make your engine more responsive to the throttle. The downside is that with the more aggressive timing with the LPM, you will need to run premium gas and will run like crap with 87 Octane because a lot of timing will be pulled to prevent knock. You won't gain much power with a cat back exhaust. I would spend the money on brakes instead. Here is some information that you might find useful.

I have an old SHO Shop guide log that details the power gains on popular accessories. I thought I would post them again. The dyno used is a DynoJet model 248C. Its my understanding that this is the best dyno to use because you can achieve repeatable results. The car used is a '89 SHO with 111K miles. A 60K was done on the engine with a leak down test to make sure the engine was in good condition. They ran the engine stock for a baseline then ran the car again after each power mod. Here are the numbers...

Stock HP 183@5900
Stock TQ 189@2800

Added 80mm MAF w/LPM and cone filter
HP 189@5900
TQ 191@4800

Added UD pulleys
HP 196@5900
TQ 198@4800

Added (original style non-equal length) Y-pipe
HP 207@6100
TQ 194@4800

Added Cat-back
HP 211@6100
TQ 197@4900

Added Extrude Honed intake and BBB
HP 213@6100
TQ 202@4900

Since you already have another toy and are just looking for a fun family car I would do the y pipe, a lighter flywheel, udp and remove the silencer cone. As far as engine mods that would be it unless you want to add a zex kit for fun, just make sure you upgrade you fuel pump. As far as tweaking your handling....defiantly upgrade your brakes. The stock ones are way too small. Something simple like the 96 upgrade is cheap, easy and makes a ton of difference. I would also recommend asfb and running a 26mm sway bar in the rear. If yous spring/struts are worn replace them with something a little firmer. This would give you a good family car that fun to drive.
