engine removal

i can't get my car to stop burning oil, so i was thinking of purchasing a motor to put in there, just wondering about how long it would take to pull the motor, and the easiest way to do it.. should you remove trans. with the motor or leave it in the car, also what else should be replaced other than exhaust gaskets?... about how long would it take, i've pulled engine from old camaros and stuff, just never from a front wheel drive car.

I am just doing this right now. What is it a MTX or an ATX? If it is an MTX, then maybe you may want to do a 3.2 conversion like I am. The engine is a bit of a ******** to get out, but take your time and make sure that you do it right. The power steering is a pain and if I was doing it again, then I would jack the engine out a teeny bit first to help get your hands behind it by the firewall. Good Luck.

Last weekend a buddy and I pulled a 3.2 and the tranny out of a parts car we had.Since this was our first sho engine removal we took it slow. We took it out from the top and let me tell you it is not fun to get out. If you are taking it out from the top and want to save your frame then take out the engine and tranny seperate. We didnt care about the front frame and just cut it to make clearence to get it out. The hardest part of getting it out was probably the exhaust. Since we are up in newengland everything was rusted so we ended up cutting it off. If we had to do this again, we would definally get the engine out from below. Seems much easier,

I always drop the whole subframe with the rack, suspension, transmission and engine still attached. I can have it out in about 10 hours. Done it too many times...

I had no trouble when I pulled my engine and tranny, just spent some extra time pulling the lower ball joints off. but other that that it took me 3 hours to pull the assembly out and about 4 hours to have it running again. I might add I have pulled a lot of engines, but this was my first SHO.

does anyone got a step by step description, i know just to label wires, and connectors and everything like that and all the vacuum lines, but where do ya start after that, i only got about 2 days time to get it done.. so what would be the best route, i have an cherry picker forthe engine, but nothing to lift the car enough to pull it from the bottom. i'm just gonna put another 3.0 in there. i'll probably hang on to the old one and pull it apart and rebuild the whole thing.

Taking everything out the bottom works for me! You just need a big hoist or a front end loader to lift the car off.
