The oil change reminder is set to max 10k miles. Highway driving will decrease 1% per 100 miles. City driving will decrease faster, count time and warm up cycles, too. It is a sophisticated algorithm. Personally, I go 5K or 50%, whichever comes first. So, if your city driving drops you to 50% in 3k change your oil. Drive to 0% will not affect the way the engine runs at all.

I'm honestly not sure. I can't even recall the last time mine has shown an oil change warning. I think it's tracking the oil life and at 5K oil changes it's never worn out. I don't race mine or regularly abuse it. But if it does pop up, it's easy enough to reset, so there's really no issues with it.
