i am thinking about getting the dunlop sport 5000's from the tire rack. they are on an insane deal for 76 bucks each for the stock size for my 95MTX. does anyone not recomend these tires? or are there any better suggestions. i need a tire with good all season performance, including winter traction. since i live in rochester NY

Thanks

The SP Sport 5000s came with my 93 ATX when I bought it back in March. I recommend them wholeheartedly, though I have not tried anything else. I live in South Dakota, and occasionally in Saint Paul, MN, so that should tell you a little about my traction obstacles.

I just bought a set a few weeks ago. I haven't tried them in the snow yet obviously, but I do have a couple deep tread tires left just in case. As for performance, they are very nice, very firm on the road, and they stick nicely. They have a treadwear rating of 340, so they ought to last a while. In the rain they seem to do well too. I've only gotten them to chirp around a corner once, and it had gravel and dirt on it. I used to have S rated Michelin's and some Defender tires. They were quite bad and liked to spin.

I have had three sets of SP 5000 in three sizes, 215/60-16 on the slicers, 225/55-16 on 7.0" rims and now 245/45-17 on 8.0" rims. They are very good for the money, great in the rain plus they handle very well. Long wearing and very freindly when pushed to the limits. A friend with them on a 1999 Grand Am GT says they are even OK in light snow.

Got them on my 95 ATX two years ago replacing Pirelli 8000. The Pirelli's were terrible in the snow, but the Dunlop's were much better. Even better handling wet or dry. Moved up from the stock size to 225/60/16. Great price that you found!

Thanks guys! I guess I have made up my mind now. The price is right, and your testaments are proof they are worth it. I'll be placing my order shortly. Thanks again!

I screwed up on typing my size - get the 225/55/16 - not the 60 series tires!

I've had them for two years now - but as soon as I say something good about the tires, something bad happens. One of the front tires blew out this morning - wore thru the belts on the inside of the tires - make sure to get a good alignment and ROTATE the tires. (learn from my mistakes??!!)

Yeah, I had wanted to get the wider tires, however, the tire rack only has the stock size on sale, and they are such an increadable deal at 76 bucks each, it isn't worth the extra money to get the extra width. Plus the narrower tires will deal better with the winter conditions here in Rochster. Anything will be better than the crap that is on the car now. the previous owner put on a pair of Goodyears on the font, which are now very close to bald, and squeal like pigs, and the rears are Firestone Affinity's also with some seriously smooth tread. I really want to upgrade from the touring tires that are on there to something a little more performance orientated. Thanks for all your input. :)

yeah, the tire rock is hooking me up, the tires are 76 bucks each, and shipping is like 30 bucks. my local mechanic is going to charge me 20 bucks a tire to take the old ones off, mount the new ones, install a new valve stem and balance. i am going to end up paying like 420 total. i think that is pretty damn good, how about you guys?

That's not too bad of a price. The thing to remember from Tirerack or other online shopping is that there will be additional fees before you actually get the tires on your car. The original $76 quickly became $103. Just make sure you take proper care of the tires and you'll have yourself a good addition to the SHO.

The yokohama Intermediates are a better deal ($47). I ordered them from "tire warehouse" who ordered them from the tick rack for me. I got the tires for $50 each instead of the $47 the tire rack wanted, but because I bought the tires from them, mounting and balencing was FREE. So I was out the door with four new yokos for $204. :)

wow! what size were those yokahamas? just out of curiosity? i already got the tires from tire rack. the other thing is how long are those yoka's going to last? and are they adequate for snow use. those were my criteria, and from everyone i heard from the dunlops were more than addequate for the kind of use they will get from me.

You know there are two versions of the SP 5g's right? You can't get the asymetrical tread design in the 60 series. The symetrical tread design is not as performance oriented as the 55 series and lower. Whoever said that they last a long time must not drive their car like it's supposed to be. I've had mine for about 15k mi, rotate EVERY oil change and they're about a little less then %50 worn. And for all the hata's, no, I don't beat on my car. thumbs_u

P.S. My next tire is probably going to be the BF Goodrich G-force T/A KDW.

Do NOT use yokohama AVS-I tires in the snow! They are a great tire and a true bargain at the price. Basically any high performace tire is a summer tire. That means they are great in the dry and in the rain. Some better than others in the rain and AVS-I's are some of the best in that department. All-seasons are a compromise tire. They excel at nothing but you can use them in the snow. Best thing is to have seperate summer and winter sets. Ultra high performance tires for summer and rainy season. Blizzaks for snow.

Again, don't take ultra high performance tires to the snow!

yeah, i am aware that the 55 series and below are directional, and the 60 series aren't, but that is ok, most of the driving i do isn't at the car's limits, and these will do fine for the driving at the limits i will do. i wanted to go the summer/winter tire route, problem is that is really expensive, maybe next year when i have more of a solid income, and not so many bills. my brother had a set of the sp5000s on his countour SVT - said he got 40000 miles out of them, which is pretty good for a performance tire. i would think so at least.
