So with the current modifications that are available(CAI, exhaust, tune) the current safe threshold to run these cars is 12.5 in the quarter mile?

something like that. though i'm beginning to wonder if the DI system won't give up before the rest of the drivetrain...

If the fuel pump limitations are the issue, what is the ceiling on performance once an upgrade is available?

depending on how good of an upgrade, i'm gonna go out on a limb and say the transfer case is gonna wind up being a weak point...i guess we'll see once people start making sick power and breaking shit.

Living in the "Motor City" I've talked to all kinds of engineers that have been involved in this platform in one way or another and they all have some idea on what will fail. Halfshafts and PTU seem to lead the pack. However all of them say there haven't really been to many failures at all. They've also said the engine is capable of making more power but was detuned to get the transmission to last however many 100s of thousands of miles

Did any of them happen to give you an idea of where that HP/Torque limit might be? I know they've talked of raising the production SHO to 400 crank HP.

I've only heard of one SHO blow up and it was somewhere in Florida. Did we ever find out the story?

There have been reports of a couple blown motors, and the one you speak in Fla I think was the first. I know what happened but cannot go into any details as not to point any fingers. I can say really low 12s is what cost the engine its life, and it looks like Beefcake had got out while the getting was good with his performance numbers. Right around that time frame is when it was all going down.

Think you can go to Beefcake's posts (later ones) and read more on this. Sort of remember it was a timing issue but don't quote me.

so what might it have been? -- over-revving, too radical a tune, driver error??????
Just wondering, and not bashing; just want to learn from someone's misfortune.

I'm not that bashful. It's been over a year. Torrie, who was one of the first tuning on these, blew his motor on Fri Oct 2nd 2009. I learned within hours of the motor blowing, not from him, but from other tuners who seem to know everything.

What I was told was I needed to get the tune out of my car right away, as it had something like 28 degrees of timing.

His motor blew on the dyno while they were working on the tune to up boost. They thought something was wrong with the car from the beginning as it was just not right. Apparently from playing with unknown parameter / too much timing, the motor got hurt and unlocking the boost on it just finished it off.

I pulled my tune, uploaded MD's tune, had a couple tranny tweaks that had to be done, and uploaded a new program sunday morning. After the car cooled for a couple hours, ran it to 12.7s'.

It's just like the new mustangs, so many new paramaters, and unknowns, it's not for the faint of heart to play with.

Thanks for chiming in Beefcake. Any info is much appreciated for those of us who want to try to avoid a similar problem.

I believe that if one sets up logging parameters on a SCT 3 Tuner and runs it in conjunction with SCT's logging software, live on your laptop, that you should be able to see the timing variations as well as up to 20 total inputs.

Has anyone been doing this?

The article above makes me believe that these motors are built to take a beating!

I remember watching the Jay Leno videos from YouTube talking about the new cop cars of the Ford SHO. The person who is talking about “a Taurus for the cops” the SHO, to the camera, how it is made and how there is not any car out there like it for the market. And how it can take a beating day and night where it would perform the same as the next shift officer to drive.
