I noticed something interesting today, something I hadn't really paid attention to in the past. My car shifts from second to third at WOT at about 6200 RPMs. It shifts out of first at about 6600 RPMs. Seems odd. It does this repeatedly. Why doesn't it take second as high as first? I realize the peak hp is at 6100 RPM, but why would it take the 1-2 shift higher than the 2-3 shift? I have not tried the 3-4 shift as I do not want to try those speeds on my snow tires.

My first instinct (although I'm not familiar with the ratio numbers) is that first and second are farther apart in ratio than second and third are- hence, you will experience a greater RPM drop jumping to a significantly higher gear. Considering this, the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift would each result in a similar resulting RPM when the destination gear for each shift is engaged.
Also, irregardless of the "space" between gear ratios, 1st is going to yield the greatest acceleration while each higher gear fights more and more against a steady wind resistance. Along the same lines of this is the inertial properties that are working more in the favor of the higher gear changes.

Mine seems to be temperature related. If the tranny is cool the 1-2 shift will occur around 6800 rpm or higher. If it's hot it will be lower. The 2-3 shift seems to be more consistant (~6200). This is supposed to put it into the meat of the torque curve in third gear. However, I've found a significant increase in trap speeds and a slight decrease it ET by holding the 2-3 shift longer.

Before the chip and lower final drive my car would shift at 6800 at the 1-2 shift and 6200 at all others.

Once I went to the 3.99 gears it would hit the rev limiter in first every time at 7050. Now the limiter has been bumped to 7500 and it shifts around 7100. All other shifts now happen at 6000 (my choosing).

I notice my 95 does the same thing, shift early at about 6 grand from second to third.

As far as the 98 it shifts at redline but you really have to have it pegged to the floor. I'm pretty sure, but then agian it's been in storage for months now so I have no driven it at all...
