Do I need to replace my clutch???

Hey how is everyone? I just bought a 92 Red SHO from a good friend of mine, Rickie Frat. The car is in real good shape for having 174,000+. The car sat from November till I bought it in January. When I started driving it I've been having trouble with shifting it. When I shift from 1st to 2nd it grinds eek! weather its cold or normal operating temp. I have to either double clutch or granny shift for it not to grind (and that doesn't always work) it does the same for reverse but it doesn't matter what I do it always grinds. I tried shifting into 1st then reverse I even tried going from 5th to reverse with no change. I also have a problem going back into 1st. When I do it is very hard I almost have to use 2 hands to get it into 1st. I'm thinking that it won't hurt to change out the clutch I think it is the original but should i rebuild the tranny? my dad can rebuild it so it isn't a problem. I just would like some input from some experienced SHO owners. thumbs_u

Depending on how high the clutch engages and how stiff the clutch pedal is... well, you might need a clutch.

try using the [SEARCH] feature of the forum, you might find what you are looking for real quick wink

Back to your SHO... the first thing I would do is change trans fluid and see if there is any change.

Sounds like your clutch release bearing has gone the way of the dodo. It is very common on the SHO. With the engine off does the trans move easier, and slip into gear? Sounds like a pretty standard failure of the throw out bearing to me.

Of course if you wanted to change the fluid, I'd go with some GM Synchromesh! Actually, try draining it, and putting in cheap ATF. If it works (which I doubt, unless the fluid in there is some sort of sludge), then switch over to the Synchromesh. If not, you haven't wasted much money, and start looking at the clutch/tranny. Sounds clutch related to me. While you're at it, rebuilding the tranny could be beneficial, at least if it won't cost you too much. If you really have the cash, throw in a Quafie differential too. I know it would end up costing quite a bit, but if you can afford it, you'd have an absolutely amazing shifting/driving/handling SHO.

Rendyx i downloaded you movie from SHOracing last night and it was really awesome thumbs_u . i also have an 89 titanium/titanium SHO. One ? why did that green SHO run a 16.30? was it a really beat ATX or was that not the correct time?

Yes as stated before definitly check/and or change the tranny fluid. New fluid can make a BIG differance. To check the fluid level (make sure car is on level ground) stick your pinky finger in the oil plug hole (this is located about 5inches up the clutch housing, facing the radiator. a 3/8" extention fits perfectly to remove) Feel around with your finger. The fluid level should be right up to the bottom of the plug. If you cant feel any fluid whatsoever it will need to be re-filled/replaced.

From my experiance (which isnt much) doesnt a bad throw-out bearing make alot of noise? Although his symptoms are pretty consistant with a bad TOB.

It could also a bad syncro, but no one will know for sure until the tranny fluid is fresh and full, so make sure it is and report back.

Thanks for all the sugestions. I'll try changing out the fluid first. It will be pretty easy because I can bring it to school and put it on the lift( the benefits if being a auto tech student ). as far as rebuilding the tranny, all I have to pay for is the rebuild kit (if there is one). My dad has rebuilt many a tranny in his professional day. He said that he will do it for me. I'll keep you all posted. thanks again.

Hey this stuff is the bomb. After checking out this thread I picked up the cheap penzoil synchromesh to see if it would help my balky shift. This stuff is incredible, the car has 127k and shifts like new agian. Thanks guys!!!

OMG...PENZOIL. eek! The name alone scares me. oh_my I KNOW no one on the forum incouraged you to buy Penzoil. oh_my However, I'm glad for you as you picked the magic bottle of all and it worked. (1 out of 20 billion)

Try the clutch first and if the symptoms still occur stop driving it and try some new blocking rings all around. What ever you do, DO NOT grind it or you'll be eating at that synchro. If it's not the clutch, then it's the ring and it can be fixed, but don't grind it or you will have no more SHO. Those 1/2 synchro assemblies are obsolete now and very HARD to find, even used and the best bet then is the junk yard. Good luck and don't grind the gears. wink ****, why don't you try some of that Lucas HD oil stabilizer in the tranny, it's been known to make miracles. shrug I'm about to try, so you wont be the only if you do, do so.

Well, I checked the fluid. But that was at a good level and it was a nice shade of red. So, now I tackle the clutch. I just ordered the HiRevs Jr. clutch kit from Sho Shop. It shouldn't be a problem. I do have access to a lift(one of the many benefits of being an auto tech student )and I have all the tools and help I need. ****, I may even have the tranny rebuilt while I'm there. Thanks for all the help and sugestions. and I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Recommend a kevlar disk, way longer lasting, resistant to heat, but not harsh. Also Shonut throwout bearing as OE is not good.

oh_my I know Pennziol, I just hated to throw money at a whim, Now that I know that what she wanted I'll put that good stuff (GM yech) in a few months. The old fluid was almost black. I happy to be able to shift, those moment of hunting a gear while old sentras ride my bumper are gone.

Well,

Thumpa is back on the road. I replaced the clutch, presure plate, TOB, etc., etc. I also installed the SS Y-Pipe w/ HF cats. She is running real good. The original clutch was not worn but the tob was almost literaly DUST. The preasure plate was chewed up pretty good too, so there was my problem. I changed it all anyway and added the GM Syncromesh. Yemar, did you just get the car back running? Did it have the sho shop y pipe when you came to my house to pick up the trunk lid? Do you like the sound of it? Also have you done anything with that spare intake yet?

How are you? I still have the intake. I haven't had the time or money to get it powder coated. All I did was change the clutch thumb . How is your car? Did you do anything to it lately? I'm going to go on the open forum sho related and set up a post. You might want to take a look at it. I have something in the works. wink boink
