Variable Assist Power Steering. Basically the steering is overboosted at low speeds making the steering easier to turn while parking.LJRuddy said:Stupid question... What the **** is VAPS? I have heard of it but i never knew what it is.

Its just a simple on/off pressure switch. It signals EEC to raise the engine idle speed if the power steering system pressure exceeds Xpsi, (can't recall the pressure trip point) which could stall the engine due to the load from the PS pump.Ace said:Then how come the 89 has a pressure switch on the rack?...Mine has one...If I'm not mistaken, it measures the pressure of the fluid in the p/s system...If the switch is faulty it will throw a soft code.
