Do 89s have the speed compensated steering?

With a fresh, tight suspension, the non-vaps SHO is a blast to drive. Tons of feedback, and so predictable.

Ive driven one SHO with vaps.... freaked me out

As mentioned a couple of posts above, Variable-Assist Power Steering. The steering assist ratio changes dependent upon your speed.

Personally, I have no issues with either, except for when you own both Gen 1 & Gen 2 SHOs concurrently - then it's a trip to bounce between the cars. :)

I prefer the non-VAPS now, as my other car doesn't even have power steering. :)

Variable Assist Power Steering. Basically the steering is overboosted at low speeds making the steering easier to turn while parking.

then how come the 89 has a pressure switch on the rack....mine has one...if im not mistaken it measures the prssure of the fluid in the p/s system...if the switch is faulty it will throw a soft code..

The ECU uses it to evaluate the load the PS pump has on the motor so it is able to compensate the idle speed as to not put too much load on the motor.

Its just a simple on/off pressure switch. It signals EEC to raise the engine idle speed if the power steering system pressure exceeds Xpsi, (can't recall the pressure trip point) which could stall the engine due to the load from the PS pump.

GenI SHOs did not have VAPS, though it was available on the 3.8L.

Just a bit of info I discovered when trying to find a rack for my Plus.
