I just replaced my valve cover gaskets, plug well seals, plugs, plug wires, and rebuilt and cleaned the upper intake manifold. I started my car after putting everything together and it starts up fine, but the idle goes right up to 4k and gradually goes down to 500 RPM and dies. At the initial startup there was a little bit of smoke.

The wires are all routed correctly. I sucked all the oil out of the wells before removing the plugs. The intake is dry and everything is plugged in.

Any ideas guys?

Alex, did you torque all the intake manifold bolts? That would leave a pretty big vacuum leak if you did not, and would cause the symptoms you describe.

MANY thanks to Chris (Autosho) and Chop for their help over AIM. It turns out I'm an idiot and did not torque down the 10mm intake to head bolts all the way. Now lemme take her for a spin...

Ok, it starts. The electricity is ground then. Check, one problem covered.

Check the throttle body. Everything ok in that area? Too much air will **** the motor.

Exactly how long does it run before dying? Does it turn over, rev super high, then just drop and die within seconds? A few more details bud. :)

By the by, where did you get those plug wires at? My local NAPA had to order them from albany NY. They still havent come in yet.

I just bought an inch pound torque wrench for that same purpose, in the future you could swing down to use it if you needed, since you arent that far and they are like $70 eek!

I bought the Taylor 8mm wires from www.summittracing.com , they're about $80 for the set.

Thanks for the offer, but I already have a torque wrench. I simply forgot to tighten down 2 of the intake to head bolts after I did the rest of them.

Check them on your next oil change. I tourqed mine to 8-10 ft/lbs and one backed out just a bit and car stalled on trip back from Denver.

Thats because the required torque for the Intake to head bolts are 11-17 ftlbs or 132-204 inlbs.

I did my intake to head bolts to 195 inlbs.

Valve cover bolts get 8-11 ftlbs.

Moving this thread to Maintenance and Troubleshooting so that the discussion can continue and this can be referenced in the future with a search.

Hmm, mental note....

Check torque on 10mm bolts....

I'll be doing my upper 60 in the coming months. This will be good to know to save myself the heart attack! :D
