delta flow questions

I'm considering making my car sound better. I like the Flowmaster Delta Flows because of the price and people recommend them.

What's better for a SHO: Delta Flow 50 or Delta Flow 40? I don't know the difference between the two. What size would I need to get for a 97 bone stock SHO?

Would I need to get anything else besides the two mufflers (I'm assuming I'd need to order two of the delta flows) or is there something else I would need?

Would I be able to put them on myself or should I see if a shop can do it? Also, if it's not just the two Delta Flows (which would cost about $140) what would my approx. total cost be?

In case you're wondering, I don't know much about working on cars or about these mufflers...

Hey, Skye! I just last weekend put the 40 series "street & strip" mufflers on our '97. I also had the resonator removed, and the stock tips put on the back. The differnce in sound is incredible... not unlike my old '63 Galaxies. I am of the opinion that the car sounds way throatier than any other modern-day musclecar. Throw in a K&N panel filter, and she'll breathe free and easy. By the way, I did a poor man's "porterization." Instead of doing the job completely, I simply cut the tube 2 inches from the fender hole, and removed the rest of the assembly from there forward. There is a noticable increase in airflow. (I started the car before removing the sax, and put my hand over the opening at the front-not anywhere near the draw of air as after cutting.) This car makes me feel 20 again!

Me again. Sorry, forgot to mention, my local muffler shop did the exhaust work for me. They sell the Flowmasters, so there was no ordering or waiting involved. A little over an hour out the door. $260.00, all welded, no clamps!

Just as an FYI, I paid $125 installed (no clamps - welded) for my Rhino 909 mufflers and maaaaan do they sound nice especially on a nice warm day like today!

SHOerwin-- Thanks for the reply. Is there a difference between the 40 series and the 50 series? What size mufflers does my car need? Which design is it? (ie Center inlet/center outlet, side inlet/side outlet, ofset inlet/outlet, etc.) Also, what would I need besides the mufflers themselves? What is the porterization and K & N filter you are talking about? I'm not really looking at making my car faster, just sound better.

wuzzzer-- Can you provide a link for those mufflers? I can't seem to find them after doing Google searches. What size and design would my car need? (see my reply to SHOerwin for examples.) Did you do anything else to it or just have the new mufflers welded on?

Skye, they are offset-offset, the stock number is 42443. As far as the difference between 50 series and 40 series, I honestly could not give you an adequate answer. I basically went with the recommendation of several SHOwners here and at v8sho. The K&N air filter is a high-flow replacement for your factory filter. Your SHO will breathe in it's needed air, and work less hard doing it. Keep in mind it is an oil impregnated filter, so if you have any kind of warranty you may want to check that you won't void it out. No real increase in horsepower with either of these mods, but it sounds great! The filter is number 33-2107. It has a million mile guarantee and will last you the life of your car. Just clean it and treat it when you do an oil change. The cost is $44.99 at Autozone. The cleaning and oil kit is around $10, but the filter is pre-treated, so you could go awhile without buying the kit if money is an issue. As far as the Porterization, check v8sho for the full decription of the process. I believe you will find it under the modifying section. You may wish to do it the way it is described there. Once you read about it, if you want to know about my way, I'll be glad to fill you in.

The 50 series is quieter than the 40 series. IMHO, Don't get the delta flows as they cut down on the exhaust noise...and the main reason for changing mufflers is to get some exhaust noise...and remember that changing the mufflers will not give you any extra HP. It all depends how loud you want to make your car, the flowmaster street/strip 40 series is noticeable inside and out...whereas the Rhinos/or Bullets will give a little burble when on the gas, but nothing like the flowmasters. If your looking for people to notice your car, handsdown, get the flowmasters! As for the size, I don't have it on hand right now, but do a search and you will be able to find it

$125 total, including both mufflers and welding factory tips back on. I think I got a great deal. I know of others who paid more than that just for the mufflers. The shop I work with is great, though. I'll never forget when I went and picked up my car after having the Rhinos installed. That's how a V8 SHO should sound! thumb
I can't seem to find a link to the mufflers, but I'll keep looking. I know the old website was ipchuth.com but it doesn't seem to be loading anymore. I can always call the exhaust shop where I got mine from and see if they can still get them.

SHOerwin-- I found the 40 Street and Strips original Flowmasters you were talking about. 2 and 1/4" in size... offset/offset.

Everyone else-- Well, I want my car to be loud enough so that it sounds like a V8, but not annoyingly loud. Now I'm torn between 40s and 50s on both original Flowmasters or Delta Flows. shrug

I want it noticeable that I had a little work on my mufflers, but not very loud. Also, I don't want to have the cops mad because of all the noise so that they find a reason to pull me over... Anyone have any opinion on which one would be right?

I'm looking to spend as little $$$ as possible to make my car sound better. I like the cheapness of the Flowmasters, but if you find that site wuzzzer I'll have to look at those rhinos.

I really have no idea what all of that other stuff is besides the mufflers. Is it really necessary? (ie filters and whatnot).

I agree with f150fan!!!!!! I have the Flowmaster 40 Street Series on mine. They sound AWESOME!!!! Im not sure if anyone here has heard them but with them on my Sho sounds close to what a Mustang sounds like. Thats about the best I can describe for ya. I paid 200.00 out the door for them too. The muffler shop will know what size to install and all that good stuff to do. thumb

Matt06, I saw the pictures of your white gen III, where did you get that windshield banner? I've been wanting a gen III windshield for my 1997 silver SHO.

tangerineskye...... I had my windshield banner made at the local sign shop. They also make custom stickers too. All I did was pick the Font and size and they made it for me while I was waiting. I think it costme like 12.00....or somewhere around there.

Oh cool. It looked a lot like the Gen III lettering so I thought I'd ask. BTW, what font and size did you ask for? Oh, and how well does it hold up to weather and such? (I'm assuming it's an outside decal, not an inside one)

Yes there are the official GEN III banners on eBay for like 10 bucks!

Im not sure what size and font it is. I will check when I get off work in the morning and let you know. The only reason I didnt order the official Gen III banner off Ebay was I needed a White one and they only come in gray....at least thats what the person said that was selling that particular one.

Its the normal outside sticker that auto stickers are made with. Its granteed up to 7 years...even with car washes and I have had it on for over a year now. I will be changing that this weekend cuz of a project I am doing to my car. So when I get back next week I shall post a couple pictures.
