Dealer techs typically do it the hard way by removing the DP to get to it. I was quoted $160 from one dealer who called and told me it would be $400+ once they had the car and tried to convince me not to do it. Told them I'm not paying $400 and Ford can pay for the warranty work if it dies.

Take it back and tell them to change the fluid. Or take it to another dealership.

Or have your friendly local Police Dept do it :). Ask around Lincoln dealerships, and BG driveline service centers. Or do it yourself! We have HowTos to help ya along.

Is yours a performance package? If not is easy. If it is you can do the pigtail to get it out and replace the fluid...see how to's or search pigtail....
I use Amsoil but redline is good too.

Dealer quoted me $97 plus tax. I'm taking it in next week to be done . Wonder if once the mechanic sees it the price will change from the service rep's quote .

Then do it somewhere else. Do you still have an active warranty? That's the only reason to keep it in the Ford service family if they are pushing back about doing it.

i wanted ptu changed their transmission guy said it doesnt get changed i say bs
- I does need to be changed, if you poke around out here you will find most people who bought a used car an changed it found the oil had pretty much been run to failure. I had mine done (after convincing my shop it needed to be done) around 50000 and the guy said it was low and had some metal in it. There has been a lot of speculation as to why the oil fails, but the bottom line is, in most cars the PTU oil brakes down over time and needs to be changed.
- Its really not that hard to do if you have a lift, drain plug (13+) or vacuum system. The biggest issue is most places just don't know what your talking about, especially in areas that don't have a lot of snow, they don't know how to service AWD cars an since most people just don't care it only comes up with people like us.
- Which leads me to another point, it used to be shops where full of car guys who actually cared about cars, today its mostly full of people who needed a job an applied, people who didn't want to go to collage so they learned a trade, or someone with money looking for a business opportunity, this is especially true of Stealerships. Look around at what most people who work in shops are driving none of them have hotrods or anything more then transportation.
- Most of us on here including myself over maintain there cars, most shops don't understand that, without fail every time I go to my shop to get something done they ether tell me "That doesn't need to be done" OR "Its not time for that yet". I would give anything if I could find a reasonably priced shop who is interested in cars as much as I am, they just don't exist anymore.
Anyway I would find someone to do it, some stealerships do good work some are about as good as your average Jiffy ****.

Check the write ups here and ecoboost performance forum. It is not hard once you know how and have the right equipment. A lift helps but not necessary. I have a pigtail installed, my shop charged 25 bucks to put on. I stick a tube down the pigtail and suck it out into a bottle, I replace with same amount of fresh Amsoil gear ****, total time 25 minutes. It dont hold much at all probably why it turns to sludge so fast. No way this crap could last 100,000 miles. I change mine in the Spring.

What is a pig tail? Is that something that is easy to put on yourself?

When a dealer says they cant do certain jobs, it's my sign to move on and find a different dealer. Or a reputable repair shop. Any honest mechanic can do this procedure. I did this with a hand pump purchased at a hardware store and some spare time.

I agree but it also depends on who your talking too, if its the shop foreman I totally agree, if its the lazy minimum wage "I cant find it on my computer, so it must not need to be done" person writing up the work order maybe there is still hope. Customer service is almost non existence except with high in products.

I did find a Ford dealer that didn’t know what a SHO was. I just asked for my keys back. Local Ford Lincoln dealer did know what it was and flushed all driveline fluids for me.

Moral of the story - find one that knows what they’re talking about.

When I bought mine I had to explain to the salesman and most of the people in the sales department what the "Performance Package" was. Same thing at CARMAX but that is understandable no excuse for a Ford dealership. As I said we are a dying breed the America car guy/girl is a thing of the past.

I guess I don't care who I am talking to at a dealer. If a dealer or a mechanic wants to stay competitive with the next guy they need to stay up to date with there product. Unfortunately I have meet several Ford dealer service writers over the years and most of them would have likely refused the work. That is where good individual service shops usually shine. They do a better job listening to the customer. Or where ordinary people become mechanics.
