I dunno, I'm suspicious of that "water pump leaking kills the sensor". My first one died with a good WP. Second one had a leaking pump, but sensor was fine.

To a certain extent, you are right. Just had a case where the water pump was leaking but didn't short out the CPS. It was leaking from where the downpipe for the radiator hose attaches to the WP. The thermostat was all messed up. I remember another case where the WP to block O ring had failed. Can't remember if it shorted out or not. However, if the pump has failed because of a leak out of the bottom weep hole between the shaft flanges, I can pretty much guarantee it will short it out.

My personal opinion, based on the dozen or so of these that I have owned, is that the water pump leaking does not have a significant impact on the crank sensor life.

Well, one would think that, because the CPS allows the car to start once it has dried out, it survives the ordeal. However, I tried a compromised CPS in a different car, and it kept on breaking down once the engine got hot.

The only data point I have. It's possible that there's residual water in the CPS that shorts it out again.

If you've still got a bad one with this symptom and 8+ hours of time on your hands, one might try soaking it in a jar of isopropanol and agitating every few days. Then pull it dry under high vacuum for hours like you dry an AC system.

Fairly certain it is not water or coolant somehow being "reactivated" by heat, though. Mine slowly died getting worse with heat, and no drips.
