Well my 98 SHO with 97,000 just started acting up the other day and threw a couple of codes. The codes are P1744 and P0306. I am thinking that a transmission rebuild and a tune up are in the near future. When the car is in drive and at a stand still it starts idling funny and lunging forward repeatedly. Then under acceleration it feels very sluggish and jumpy. In some other threads I have read this may be the torque converter. So I guess I am looking for some advice.

Any ideas on how much this typically costs?

I am really leaning towards trading this in and getting something new but I am thinking that in this shape I wouldn't get anything for it? I would also consider selling the vehicle privately after getting it fixed but don't know if it would be cost effective depending on how much it would cost to fix. The car has had its cams welded and I think is in very great shape with pretty low mileage for its age, so I think it still has a lot of life left I just dont know if I have the time anymore to keep her running. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I have had a P1744 for nearly 50k miles on my 99. Thats the TCC that is having problems and throwing the code. Mine just has trouble locking/unlocking and it gets some what poorer mpg because of this.

My father just had his 99 Ram 4x4 Transmission rebuilt (after 165k on the original) and they offered to price out my rebuild at around ~ $2,500 for a complete R&R with a new TC.

The tune does help a lot though I will admit that.

Does yours do the pulsing at a stop? Any chance that a transmission flush and change would make the problem go away? Any idea on the tune up cost for new plugs and wires? Thanks a lot for the help.

;)if you ganna do a tune up have some good cash at hand plugs i recomend .. motorcraft i for get part number off hand .. v8sho.com has the number on there site... i bought my plugs for about $5 a plug and as for wires these v8 shos dont have them they are full coil on setup ..so depending where you go $85 to $135 a piece and yes my friend you need 8 of them .. and then comes the fun part of dismanteling the intake to get at the back plugs .. .. so if you have a quarter swearing jar you may find yourself filling it up rather quickly ..lol ..

You don't need to replace all 8 coils. If you are replacing the plugs it's worth it to replace all four rear coils at the same time because they are slightly more difficult to replace than the front.

I cleared out both codes Sunday morning and they haven't come back since. Is this a good sign? Car still idles rough and pulses with the car in drive at a stop. Do you think it would be worth the money to have the transmission fuild changed? Could that make the problem with the transmission go away? Thanks.

Put a new coil on cyl 6. Unless a coil is 100% dead, it can take quite a while for the misfire counters to flip a light.

The P1744 is not going to get fixed with a fluid change. Just keep driving it until the car won't go anymore and live with the worse fuel economy.

Ok, got it on cyl 6. So a transmission fluid change will not fix the problem but will it make the condition any better in the short term? The car is right at 100k and I don't think it has ever had a transmission fluid change, I have only had it for 4k miles though. Thanks again for the help.

You're lucky it's coil #6 as it's on the front.

Change the one coil and plug and call it a day. But save up some money because you'll eventually need a tranny and some more coils and plugs.

No more then likely not, we see a ton of these and a fluid change and the addition of lucas transmission treatmeant will help prolong the life of certain doom.

is this car welded?

Ok, I may end up trying the Lucas transmission treatment and a fluid change just to make the car last a little longer, I really don't have $2k laying around for a new transmission right now. The cams were welded by Rickety Engineering in Ohio at around 70k miles, the interior is very nice and there are no rust problems so I think the car still has potential for someone willing to invest a little money.

I went to the dealer yesterday to see what I would be able to get for the car as a trade in. They offered me $1750 for it. Considering a new transmission would cost somewhere around $2k and the vehicle also needs a full tune up and 100k miles service does this seem like an alright deal? If I sold it privately I don't know if I would feel comfortable asking much more than that for it given the maintenance this car will require. Any input is appreciated.

You may be surprised how long the tranny will last even with the codes.

Here's the $64,000 question, can you get a car that you'll enjoy as much as this one with the money you'll get from the SHO plus the $2k-$3k you'd need to spend on it to get it running perfectly. Or are you just looking for basic transportation? If you're looking for an A to B car I suggest something other than a SHO.
