Ok My check engine light goes on and off while driving (usually stays on for a couple minutes then shuts off). Naturally I ran the codes on the car and it comes up with
KOEO:
Continuous
124(TPS Voltage above normal? - what does it mean)
212(Loss of ignition diagnostic monitor/SPOUT circut grounded?)
332(Insufficient EGR flow?)
452(VSS - already bought one just havent gotten around to doing it as it's a lengthy thing to do)
628(Excessive converter clutch slippage?)
Key on:
539(Scratch this one I just had the AC on)

KOER:

116(no I didn't let the car warm up)
332(same as above)
538(insufficient RPM change - what would cause this?)
632(The overdrive switch doesn't work always in overdrive)

If anyone has a good way to replace the VSS please send me link, and please help me with the CEL (my wife is freaking out about it)

Thanks

You should coorect all KOEO codes before you run a KOER test, at least according to what I have read. At any rate, if it were my car here is want I would do;

124=replace the TPS. They are cheap, under $30

212=check to see if the SPOUT connector(s) is/are in place. If they are, make sure they are clean and corrosion free. If they look good, ignore tham till you correct the other problems. I have had a SPOUT code pop up in association with other issues. Correct the main problem, and the SPOUT code goes away.

332=Clean the EGR valve. The problem may go deeper than that, but it is a good first step.

628=Sorry, I am of no help on this one. ATXs are Greek to me. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Hope this is of some benifit.

Start with the very first code. Fix it. Reset the codes and retest. Repeat until ALL codes have been corrected. Do not skip around as some codes may be the result of conditions that were reported on a previous code.

For the 124 code, it is either an intermittent TPS or a faulty connection. The TPS can be tested with a voltmeter to check for a smooth transition of the output voltage through the TPS range.

For the 332 code, don't bother cleaning the EGR valve, it is seldom the cause. Find my past writeups on this code by following the TIP in my signature to properly diagnose the code then repair it.

For the 528 and 632 codes, it's probably just a matter of your timing during the "goose test".

There is no "good" way to replace the VSS on an ATX. It's a PITA from all reports.

I also have a 93 ATX, and when I got the tranny rebuilt, the guy mentioned something about an aluminum piston that was worn out and cracked beyond belief. He said it's standard practice now to use Iron ones nowadays. He assured me that this, combined with a shift kit, would provide much firmer shifts and better grip at high revs. It's been about 4 months since the rebuild, and it still shifts firm and takes my ungodly abuse.
