I have a stock very clean 89 MTX and will be replacing the cable shifter with a rod shifter. My question is what clutch can I put in this car for SMOOTH shifting and daily durability? I'm not looking on the performance end at all, but rather daily driveability. Thanks for your help guys and merry Christmas.

You should find tons of information using the search feature which located to your upper right. The HD PP / 9-puck Fibertuff combo from www.shonutperformance.com is of very high quality. See what you come up with using the search.

The rod shifter was a running production upgrade to the cable shifter starting about June of 1991 and is only a change to the linkage between your right hand and the shift stub protruding from the rear of the transaxle. Whatever clutch disk and pressure plate you decide to install will have no effect on the effort or ease of the shifting as long as it fully uncouples the engine from the transaxle.

For smooth and easy clutch action, the stock pressure plate and disk are a good combination. you will have to verify what the diameter of the flywheel currently is in your driveline. The subsequent model years of the MTX used a 9.75" diameter clutch disk that was larger and incompatible with the smaller OEM clutches through approximately the 1991 model year.

There have been descriptions posted in this Forum on how to verify the diameter of the flywheel with removing only the starter and looking at the edge of the pressure plate. Please try the "search" feature available at the upper right of the Forum's pages for this detailed information.

For a good stock clutch kit, I recommend the South Bend Rally clutch. I've had it in for about 4,000 miles now and I like it.
