Clutch is not disengaging

I finally got the engine running with out any oil leaks but now the clutch won't disengage. I do feel clutch pressure. I wasn't sure I had propped up the peddle when I removed the engine and tranny. So, I propped up the peddle, removed and then reattached the cable. The fork swung toward to the radiator with no resistance and back. I pulled the cable through the fork and released the peddle. The clutch peddle feels like it has proper spring pressure and I pumped and lifted the peddle several times but the clutch still won't disengage to get the car in gear.

Yes. That was my first concern because I installed a rod shifter among other things. so I know that the gears are lining up but, i'm not so sure the clutch had anything to do with it.

After searching some post I'm afraid I may not have noticed which direction the clutch was supposed to face when I installed the new engine. Any other suggestions before I pull the tranny would be greatly appreciated.

To further complicate the situation, I bought this '90 "Zero Option" car not running. I swapped everything under the car and in the engine bay except the tranny from my '91.

A backward disk will do that.

just make sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly before dismantling everything again.

When you lift up on the clutch pedal a spring loaded tensioner should pull all the slack out of the clutch cable. if you can disconnect the clutch cable from the transmission by hand after lifting up on the clutch pedal , then there is still too much slack in the cable and there is probably something wrong with your clutch pedal tensioner

When I checked the cable tension there was no slack at the fork. I propped the clutch peddle up and with pliers under tension I was able to remove and reset the clutch cable. Pumped the peddle several time and lifted up. Everything feels the same. No slack in the cable and reasonable clutch pressure.

Any other suggestions? What if I pull the tranny and find out the clutch is turned the proper direction. Any suggestions then?

Have someone take a look at it that isn't cross eyed...

Yep, that was a lot of work for a mistake I'll never make again. The clutch WAS in backwards.

Happens to the best of us. After many a successful clutch jobs, I did this same thing last time. I'm still shaking my head...
