Im hearing a slight clunking from my rear passenger wheelwell. I've gone underneath the car and everything looks in working order. Do you think it could be the strut mount?

the rear mounts on my dads 93 sho are so bad..it sounds like someones playing ping pong in the trunk

when he took it to a suspension shop..the estimate was somewhere around 1300 dollars to replace everything that was worn out and bad... :oogle:

Check the struts as well, and the sway bar endlink. The endlinks when worn or missing the bushing can make a clunking noise. I currently have a nasty clunk from my right rear. But my problem was a little easier to find... oil dripping all down the Tokico strut. See if you can push up and down on that corner of the car and make the noise reappear.

I have the same problem... so I bought new strut mounts to fix the problem... and everything else since it was going to be apart. I bought the "NotSoSlowSHO Suspension Package." Moog strut mounts, coils, endlinks, Monroe struts, and FoMoCo pinchbolts. $638 from RockAuto. The pinch bolts came from shonut. I think that should fix it.

I had a loud clunking on the rear passenger side of my 91 that really sounded like the top of the strut mount, but couldn't figure out what it was for the longest time because nothing was worn out or loose. I finally figured that it was part of the stereo amplifier bracket in the trunk.

So if you have the the JBL premium system with the amps in the trunk, check that first. On the passenger side, part of the bracket bolts to the wheel well. To check it you'll have to pull back the carpet that goes up the wheel well, and if it's loose you'll be able to tell and there's just one bolt to tighten. That was my problem though, maybe that might be you're problem too.

One other thing before you start tearing into the struts, give your exhaust a good yank/shake, make sure it isn't banging against the floor pan.

Got Konis? If you don't get the "shim" in the assembly the Koni will rattle a bit over bumps and such as it moves around in the modified casing of the old strut. That's what my rear is doing. Getting mounts for when I take it apart; two birds, one stone.

Check your amplifier mount in the trunk. It drove me nuts forever, like sombody was playing ping pong back there.

Everything has been replaced and I still have a rattle in the rear, although it is nowhere near has loud as before. It is still there though. I took the spare out and then took a spin. Still have the noise. I checked the amps and they all seem secure. Arrrrg. :madflame:

Also, did you check and/or replace the rear sway bar frame bushings? If not I'd bet that's where the noise is coming from.

I think you are right. The bushings are original. I will get new Moog sway bar bushings on and let you know if the noise subsides.

Thanks,
John

I replaced the entire rear suspension; strut mounts, struts, springs, end links, I even replaced the sway bar bushings. The clunking remains...checked exhaust and amp. Very frustrated.....good thing the stereo can overpower the noise.

Well I just redid my whole supension eibach, tokico's and everything else is moog. I too have that clunking sound and wandering what the **** it is. Today I went out after work and tightened my battery in the trunk hoping thats what it is. I try the spare tire next and if that doesn't work than back to my mechanic. It goes back on next thursday anyway for oil change and subframe connector attachment. I'll let you know.

Mine will be back at the mechanic next week as well. My subframe was also recently done - not that problem, but now I can steer straight... If I manually "bounce" the back end, I get a scraping / clunking sound on the drivers side, so could be a defective strut or mount, it is getting worse fast, so there is certainly a problem...

I took a ride in my trunk today and...

I found the culprit for the noise in coming from the rear after the suspension overhaul. I noticed the trunk had about a half inch of play when closed. I adjusted the catch in the trunk that is mounted to the body of the trunk down. I also brought the the rubber stops out two full turns. The noise is GONE!!! :naughty:
