I just changed the Trans. filter in my 93 atx and noticed a loose tube when i took the filter off.
Has anyone noticed this before. My Ford service manual calls it the (Reverse **** Tube). The tube
is up in the hole but not all the way. Its tappered so you would think that it should fit tight but it don't. The book specifically calls for a tool (**** tube remover and impact slide hammer) to remove the tube so that right there tells me it should be snug and not loose.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

Trans does not seem to have any problems except for the hard 1-2 shift and unexpected down shifting while driving.(changed the VSS last week to see if that would help but the hard shift is still there, but i think the downshifting problem is gone) VSS out and back in less than 2 hrs with two people.
Well if anyone knows please respond..........

The loose tube is not normal. If it's loose, it's leaking. Each end of each tube is pressed into the hole. The ends have a shoulder on the tube to control how far the tube should be pressed into the hole. I've never run across a loose one, but I've pulled them out to get to the cluch packs and such. Each tube should be seated in the hole all the way to the tube shoulder. Usually, it'll go partway by hand and then require gentle persuasion to fully seat. I've gently tapped the tube with a rubber mallet (careful not to deform the tube) and if that doesn't work, use a dull chisel or square punch against the shoulder. The idea is to tap around the shoulder until it seats, but not damage the tube.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input,
But there are no shoulders on these tubes they
are smooth all the way up to the tapper at the end of the tube. I did try to put it up in the hole further but it would not go. pushed and pushed and would not go. I even tried a rubber mallet and it would not go. it sounds like it is hitting metal and bottoming out. but i'll keep trying.

As for type of trans fluid i used it was valvoline ATF mercon
