When starting a cold engine, a get a racket of noise, like tumbling rocks, in a metal container.

When I crawled under the car when first started I heard the racket of noise coming from one of the catalytic converters.

I'm assuming that the catalyst broke loose from its bed or container and that is what is causing a racket. :frown:

When the engine is warmed up, you can hardly hear the noise, probably because once the catalyst expands from the heat there is less room for it to bang around.

I have a Performance Plus Y-pipe that is about 17 years old.

Can I cut old the damaged catalytic converter and weld in a new one?

Where can I purchase a new catalytic converter?

Thanks.

The converter used is a Magnaflow "carsound" brand. You can find one at any Magnaflow dealer, or FPS has them in stock. I had a rear one break as well. Welded a new one in and all was well, so yes you can replace it.

Don't drive it that way. There is alway's a possibility that the pieces of broken "cat" can get sucked back up into the engine.

I have no choice but to drive it because I only have one car and there is no other way to drive to work.

But, and here I guess is the bad part, I no longer hear the "tumbling rocks" sound when I start it up - even from a cold start, when I always hear it. It used to be that only when the car warms up that the sound goes away almost completely.

I hope I am not screwed.
