Well I stopped at a store on the way home from work and when I went to restart it the ignition cylinder just turned freely and wouldn't start. I fooled with it for a minute and finally got it to start. Got home and went to turn the key to off and the cylinder just spun freely from run to off, and the car would not shut off! I pulled the DIS connector off to turn the car off and pulled the ignition cylinder to see if there were any internal problems. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary inside, but it was very tough to see in the dark. With the ignition cylinder out it still spun pretty freely from off to run. Does it sound like the ignition cylinder has finally worn out?? I know I can get an aftermarket ignition cylinder but I really want to keep the same key for the ignition... can I go to Ford and have them bend me over... I mean order me a new cylinder to match my key? At any rate I'll probably get an aftermarket ignition cylinder so I can at least shut the car off normally until I can get to Ford if they can even do it. Anyways thanks for any input. BTW I couldn't even get the car to shut off with a flat tip screw driver... perhaps the blade was too big to fit all the way in. I know it fit in where the sides of the ignition paddle fit in but I don't think that it was going in all the way where the tip of the paddle sits. Thanks.

-Frustrated and have to be at work for 7am tommorrow

Buy a new ignition lock cylinder at any local auto parts chain, and then take it to a locksmith with your old cylinder and key and they will rekey the new cylinder to match your old key. Last time I had it done (a couple of years ago), they charged $25 for rekeying the new cyl.

I don't know if this may be it but in my 1995, I went to turn my car off and the cylinder spun freely, it just wasn't catching the ignition switch peg. It turned out that the rod that goes from the ignition cylinder to the switch lost the small metal peg and what was happening was that I could start the car but I couldn't turn it off. Let's hope this isn't your problem.

That sounds like my problem... except I bought a new cylinder and installed it and it's doing the same thing. What did you have to do to fix it and how much did it cost you? Seeing how I replaced the ignition lock cylinder with a new one I'm assuming the problem is internal.
