Car Stalled Out

I dont have a check engine light, but could I possibly have a code?

Yes it is possible. Codes can be stored in Continuous Memory.

The fuel pump is an easy one to diagnose: Next time it quits running turn the car off and then turn it to run but don't try and crank it. If you hear the fuel pump prime (it will run for a few seconds) then it's not the pump. If you don't hear the pump, it's dead and will need to be replaced.

Now I have a new issue.

the last 2 days were hot. diving to work was fine in the morning as it is still cool.

After work after driving in stop and go for 20 mins, the charge light come on and off mostly when stopped at a light.

It runs like crap while this is going on. I pulled the 3 prong connector on the alternator and it runs smooth.

Is this a symptom of an alternator on the way to crater-ville? I have just under 100K miles on the car and I have never replaced the alternator.

I have done some reading on the forum and it seems that rebuilding the current unit is better than getting a reman.

Thoughts?

the best way to really check the pressure, is to attach the guage and keep it attached while driveing. that way if its the pump is having a problem, the needle will fluctuate and bounce up and down. but that is hard and a little dangerous at times. as far as altenator, ive used quality reman units with no problems. and for replacing just because of mileage, a part can go out at any point of any time, regardless of mileage. might be 50 feet or 50 years......

It hasnt died on me since. Just developed this new charge light issue.

What is the alternator putting out? It can be undercharging or overcharging the battery? Did the light go out when you unplugged the alternator?

The light went out when it was unplugged.

It puts out 14.14 volts.

Yes it should be around 13.65v.

When the car stalls out and you are cranking it what does the tach do?

If your crank sensor has failed, you won't see the tach move when you try to start right?

I started up the SHO on Saturday and had it idle for about 15 minutes until it stalled out. Tried to restart, it'll crank but won't start. Tach needle registers that the motor is turning over. I can hear the fuel pump prime. I need to check for codes but damnit, I haven't messed with an OBD I system in years and I can't remember how to do this nor how to operate my NGS...

So I yanked the alternator and had an alternator shop give it a once over. The voltage regulator was hooped. The alternator was the original unit with 100K miles on it.

Now it doesn't make the horrible noise when I start it up. I problem fixed, one to go.

I checked for codes and all is well.

The drive home was fine as well.

Would my faulty alternator be the cause of random stalling?
