Hey everyone,
I am hoping someone on here can help me out with my 94 ATX and some issues I have been having lately.

First the symptoms:
It all started about 6 months ago when the check engine light started coming on intermitently. It would come on periodically when it got warmed up and would usually go out. The car still ran smooth without any noticeable difference. After a month or so, it started coming on all the time once it got warmed up. Again, no noticeable difference in the car. Since I don't drive it that often, I put off getting it fixed.

Just recently, I started driving it more and it is still doing the same thing, however now it doesn't want to start after it is warmed up. Its starts great cold, but if you drive somewhere and shut it off, it won't start back up. When you try to start it, it turns over, may even fire and idle extremely rough (around 300 rpms) and die(almost acts like it isn't getting fuel). If you try three or four times, you usually can get get is started and once it is going, it runs great. The hard part is just getting it going.

Therefore, I figured it is time to spend some time figuring out what is going on as I am going to have to start driving this thing regularly when I start working on my jeep here in a few weeks. I went ahead and pulled the codes and got several different codes come up. I am bit confused as to what where i should go with this information, so i figured i would ask those more experienced with this car than I. The following codes are the ones that came up when i pulled them this morning.

335, 551, 211, 212, 214, 332, 232, and 538.

From my research, it seemed there were several codes related to the ignition module and the egr. So would I be right to assume that i need to replace the ignition module and egr valve? Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brett

That would be great. I could use all the help I can get. I am pretty good with mechanical stuff (like my jeep), but I am pretty poor at the whole electrical issue problems.

The EGR codes are the least of your concerns. If the engine won't run (and an EGR fault won't easily cause that), EGR isn't relevant.

What is important to your starting concerns are the 211, 212, and 214 codes. Start by verifying the ground integrity from the DIS module to the crossover tube to the grounding strap between the head and the firewall. Also check the ground wire that goes from the battery negative terminal to the strut tower to the firewall.

Your original described symptoms are typical of an EGR fault, but your current and most severe problem is the ignition system is not working properly.

If your grounds are sound and secure, I'd replace the CID sensor next.

EGR Nostrils photos

Here is a shot of the EGR nostrils location. They are the lower set of holes behind the throttle body. Mine were covered w/ soot giving me a few EGR related codes.

EGR nostrils

Cleaned them w/ carb cleaner and #18G wire, being careful to keep the fluid out of the other holes (lead to the IABP valve).
