Car Died - Igntion Maybe?

I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem I'm having. About two months ago my car broke down. It was wrapped up to about 6000 rpms then just shut itself down.

I brought it home and swore I didn't see it sparking any at all. But, upon taking the fuel filter off, it was hard to blow through it. I bought another, put it on, car started right up.

Yesterday I was turning onto the highway and at about 6000 rpms the car shut down again and this time let out a backfire. I changed the fuel filter because it was just a little hard to blow through. I still won't start up. I have a feeling there's no spark.

Anyone else had a similar problem in the past? If so, please let me know. If someone has a spare coil pack or ignition module, that'd be helpful too. Thanks.

When the car dies like that it throws a code. Check the codes. Go to the shotimes faq if you need procedural outlines.

Crank the motor and see if the Tach is registering around 300 rpm while cranking if not CPS. The back fire seems to lean a little towards a faulty CID possibly mixing up the cylinders, however other things could cause it as well. Run the codes this happened so quick you probably didn't see the CEL come on or just thought it was normal cause the motor stalled. There will be a code to tell you whats wrong.

The cylinder identification (CID) sensor usually will cause only a stumble when the engine is running. It is more likely the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) that faulted and cut the engine out. Did you see the tachometer drop immediately to zero even though the engine was still spinning? That would indicate the CPS failed. It usually resets after a time and allows the engine to start and run like nothing had happened. A faulted CID sensor will cause very ugly engine starting conditions as the EEC guesses at the cylinder firing order.
