I don't think the two problems are related. My buddies 89 has a CANP code also. We swapped his out with mine and the code was gone and it ran the same. I'm not exactly sure how it works but I believe it just vents fuel vapors from the canister back to the engine when it fills to aid it fuel economy and emissions. Don't quote me on this. :D

That is indeed what it does. The charcoal canister stores fuel vapors, and when the PCM determines optimal conditions for a "purging" of those vapors (usually warm cruise), a solenoid (the "canister purge valve") is energized allowing the vapors to be sent to the intake where they get mixed in with the air/fuel charge and burned.

A malfunctioning EVAP system could affect performance, since the PCM is programmed to reduce fuel injection pulse times when the vapors are being routed into the engine (so as to maintain the proper A/F ratio).

I think my canister is full,or is'nt purging.
I bought the purge solenoid and that did'nt help.
When I coast down a hill most anytime I will get the strong smell of something.I can't tell what it is but it is strong.Does this sound like a full canister?

You might want to check those vacuum lines to and from the CANP solenoid for deterioration and leaks. The $25 valve in itself will not cause the engine to run very differently. I had the CANP code for a good length of time before finally replacing it. I didn't smell any fuel vapors or notice any engine behavior change.

Scott brings up a good point. I recently changed the rubber hoses that run to/from the CANP on my SHO, they were looking a little shabby. After I pulled them off I noticed that one of the hoses was really in a lot worse shape than I thought.

If your canister isn't purging, then either the system has blockage somewhere, or the solenoid is not activating, meaning you probably should check the integrity of the circuit, as well. For starters, the solenoid uses battery power, so make sure you are getting that at the harness connector.

EVAP Vacuum Leakdown Test

Here's a way to check whether the EVAP system has leaks:

EVAP VACUUM TEST

l Remove fuel vapor hose at canister.

l Install a plastic vacuum fitting in the fuel vapor hose and add a small piece of vacuum hose to the other end of the vacuum fitting.

l Install a vacuum pump at the open end of the small piece of hose.

l Apply 1.5 in-Hg (5.2 kPa) maximum vacuum with the vacuum pump.

l Is the fuel system holding vacuum?

Yes
Fuel tank, fuel vapor hose and gas cap indicate no leaks. REMOVE vacuum pump. RECONNECT carbon canister.

No
SERVICE as necessary the fuel leak or EVAP vacuum leak (gas cap, fuel vapor hose or fuel tank). REPEAT vacuum check on this part of the system to verify service.

I know im an idiot... but I don't know where my canister is on my 94ATX. I have my manual somewhere (Just moved everything still boxed up) but cannot locate it. Thanks for the help. I need to replace all my Evap/EGR components asap so I can pass smog. (bout $200 for EVERYTHING)

THanks fellas.

Well, the canp is easy to find. See that vacuum line running from near the throttle body? It goes straight toward the ground, it's a smallish one. It goes to a little brass can thingy that has two vac lines and an electrical connector that goes to it. That's the CANP solenoid.

Here's pics to help.

Oh, and you can get the part for cheap here:
