That's not a bad idea. Maybe hollow them out so they pass visual inspection.

No point in that. My car won't pass even with the cats, and the SPOUT connector disconnected. The only visual inspection we get is when we go for the E-Test.

I am confused. Did you buy and install a new Y-pipe with new catalytic converters? Or did you do something else to get through the test?
Can you post your numbers now?
If you bought a new one, which one did you buy?
If you did pass with a new cat system, I would be tempted to remove the offending cats and re-install the old pipe..... saving you new one for the next test in 2 years.

I didn't know how bad things are up there. Some places in California, cops will look you over if it sounds modified and issue a ticket.

Yup, bought the walker direct fit y-pipe with catalytic converters. Numbers went down to:

HC's 0.31
CO's 2.59
NOx's: 0.15

HC .6189 (0.5000 to pass)
CO 2.3752 (9.3200 pass)
NOx 1.6043 (1.2400 to pass)

car had been sitting for 6 months, so I thought I could drive it longer and retest after a few tanks of gas, so thanks for sharing your experience and costs of testing. There were rumours of getting rid of 'Airscare', but recent news articles predict a new contract. failure rate is 17 %.
Could you share where you got your cats and for what price?

I got them from Rockauto.com. Lordco can't get them for 3 months, they have to be ordered direct from walker. You can get the pipe to catback gasket though.

They are regular $345.79 for both cats and the y-pipe. With a 5% rockauto discount code, they discounted $17.29. Shipping $34.41 (Mine came from New Jersey) and of course, our HST is $39.42.

It did take me a while to install the Walker y-pipe. You have to install the front one first, then do the back. Pain to install. If you can, thread a few threads at the front, then thread a few at the back, then a few more at the front, then more at the back. First time I did it I had a massive exhaust leak at the front, because I installed the rear first and the front didn't get lined up properly.

You don't have to pay duty on RockAuto orders, because you pay the tax at the time of the order. They're usually shipped Fedex to Canada.

But yes, i'm not happy about the 10 year extension of Aircare. We'll find out the final decision on November 26th. Costs alot of people a lot of money to keep their old cars on the road. I don't really like much of the new stuff. I've only owned cars 95 and older. The new cars, you just pay $45 and they plug a code reader into it. What a ripoff.

Going way back in the SHO memory bank, I also recall something about mixing toluene with your gas to help pas a test. Something like a gallon the 10 gallons of gas.

My 95 Manual failed emissions inspection in late September in Virginia.

Numbers were:
15 MPH
HC ppm 91/11 PASS
co%. 37/.02 PASS
NO ppm 1200/1621 FAIL

25 MPH
HC ppm 100/10 PASS
co%. .53/.01 PASS
NO ppm 1167/2669 FAIL

I took it to my local Ford dealer and after 2 days he said it was the converter and they could not get the part.

I joined this forum and figured out where to buy the y pipe and cats and have just gotten them installed and am ready for a reinspection.

I was told that I should drive the car for a while--does anybody have any ideas for how long/far?

Any guesses whether it will pass?

I got the Shosource equal length system in January of this year after failing the E-test. I finally took it to a place that had a heatgun which measures the temperature at each end of the cats. They are supposed to be in the 700 degree area and mine were back at 500 or so.
I installed the system one night and took the car for the test the next morning after driving about 10 miles, and it passed.
Your car will pass the test as it is now.
My best readings come after finishing a 100 mile highway trip, and not shutting the car off before the test (try to time it just right to match your appointment).
