Would it be advantageous to bypass the radiator trans cooler and use the stock external one in conjunction with an aftermarket one instead? Has this been done?

The cooler built into the radiator is needed in the winter months. It helps warm the ATF in cold weather during warm-up. The recommended way to install an aftermarket cooler is to have the ATF pass through the radiator and then through the aftermarket cooler. So ditch the factory external cooler.

Why ditch the OEM coolers? I run mine after the factory aux cooler. The radiator cooler will still cool the fluid even on a hot day. The coolant temp in the radiator should be under 150F even on a hot day.

See its odd. I thought of this because when my ATF fluid gets warm my shift quality degrades by a significant factor. If I can keep the fluid as cool as possible that would be a good thing right? I mean my 1-2 shift is as firm as can be when the car is cool, but when warm it truly sucks.

Would I benefit from a thicker fluid?

(This is the original tranny BTW) shrug

The tranny fluid will run around 175F or so. So the radiator is actually still cooling it. The HE in the radiator is more efficient than an air to fluid one is.

What kind of fluid are you using?
